ResumoA brucelose caprina por Brucella melitensis nunca foi relatada no Brasil, enquanto poucos relatos de infecção por Brucella abortus foram feitos. Um rebanho caprino composto de 124 animais adultos localizado no estado do Rio de Janeiro foi avaliado quanto à presença de anticorpos anti-Brucella abortus. Sete (5,6%) caprinos e uma vaca presente na propriedade apresentaram sororeatividade. Todos os animais sororreativos foram abatidos. Doze meses após os primeiros testes todos os animais do rebanho foram novamente testados e todos os animais foram negativos.Palavras-chave: Brucella abortus, brucelose, caprinos. AbstractCaprine brucellosis caused by Brucella melitensis, has never been related in Brazil, while Brucella abortus infection is sporadically related. A goat herd with 124 adult animals located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil was tested against anti-Brucella abortus antibodies. Seven (5.6%) goats and one cow were seroreactive and were slaughtered. Twelve month after the first screening the whole herd was tested and all the animals were negative.

There are several infectious diseases that affect equines and can cause large economic losses in this sector and damage to animal welfare. In this species, abscessing lesions of a purulent character preferentially in the withers are strongly suggestive of brucellosis. However, few studies have been carried out on the disease in this species, making its identification and control difficult due to the lack of standardization in the interpretation of results. Therefore, samples of whole blood, serum and purulent secretion were collected from three horses. The animals came from the state of Pará. The diagnostic methods selected were the Rose-Bengal plate test (RBPT) and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), for the negative molecular results for brucellosis, microbiological analysis were chosen. Although part of the samples were positive for brucellosis in serological tests, all of them showed negative results for PCR. In bacterial cultivation, species were isolated Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus, Enterococcus faecalis e Staphylococcus sciuri subsp. lentus., which showed resistance to antibacterials, especially the E. faecalis isolate classified as MDR (multi drug resistant). In conclusion, the best form of diagnosis is the joint evaluation of several tests, both screening and confirmatory, in order to obtain a definitive diagnosis with assertiveness.

The aims of the present study were (i) to determine the occurrence and (ii) to evaluate possible factors associated with infection by Brucella abortus in free-ranging equids from Mossoró, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. Sera from 227 free-ranging equids (178 donkeys, 43 horses and 6 mules), captured by the highway police and the prefecture agents, were screened by the rose bengal test (RBT) and confirmed for B. abortus-antibodies by the standard tube agglutination (STAT) and the 2-mercaptoethanol (2ME) tests. Of the 227 equids tested, four (1.76%) were positive for B. abortus antibodies. All were horses, which resulted in an observed frequency of infection for this species of 9.30% (4/43). No association was found among seropositivity for B. abortus and the age and sex. Thus, data from the present study showed that infection by B. abortus is present among horses in Mossoró, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil.
