Em animais domésticos, as alterações macroscópicas mais comumente encontradas em casos de insuficiência renal crônica incluem glossite ulcerativa; gastrite ulcerativa e hemorrágica, pneumopatia urêmica, mineralizações de tecidos moles, como mucosas gástrica e intestinal, e de pleura parietal nos espaços intercostais, frequente em pequenos animais; e colite ulcerativa e hemorrágica, esta última mais comuns em grandes animais Endocardite atrial ulcerativa e osteodistrofia fibrosa também podem ser observadas (Serakides, 2011).
