Effect of potassium sources on potato tuber yield and chip quality

Abstract: Many potato producers for fry industry changed from the use of potassium chloride to potassium sulfate, as there is a concept that the use of this source improves tuber quality. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of these two potassium sources on yield, specific gravity and chip color of potato chipping cultivars. The experiment was carried out on a Dystrophic Red Latosol, in Canoinhas, Brazil, in spring season 2016. Treatments consisted of two potato cultivars, BRSIPR Bel and Atlantic, and two so… Show more

“…The percentage of total sugars and reducing sugars did not differ between potassium fertilizer sources and their combinations ranging from 22.26 to 29.18% and 0.05 to 0.09%, respectively (Figure 3A and 3B). Silva et al (2018) did not find any significant effect of sulfate or potassium mixture on the quality of the cultivars BRSIPR Bel and Atlantic. Quadros (2010) found values of total sugars lower than observed in this experiment, which may be related to the interactions between the factors during the growing cycle (environmental and management).…”

“…Therefore, the treatments produced tubers with sugar content compatible with industry acceptability (0.049 to 0.094%) and these values were close to that found by Quadros (2010) (0.048%). Silva et al (2018) did not found significant effect of potassium source on yield components, specific gravity and chip color in BRSIPR Bel and Atlantic. These different results related to the literature may be attributed to different K levels, fertilizer K rates, or potato varieties, and need further investigation (Li et al 2015).…”

“…The maximum yield of potato tubers (27.86 t ha -1 ) was recorded from K 3 which was statistically similar (27.33 t ha -1 ) to K 1 , while the lowest yield (26.02 t ha -1 ) was found from K 2 . Silva et al (2018) recorded no significant effect of potassium source on yield of potato. Different levels of vermicompost showed statistically significant differences in terms of yield of potato tubers ha -1 (Table 1).…”

“…irrigation, fertilization, quality of potato seeds and more effective control of pests and diseases results in the increasing productivity levels registered during the last decades. The productivity increase is possible because potato crop shows a very remarkable response to the crop management techniques, such as, the application of large quantities of fertilizers (Silva et al, 2018a), or an efficient chemical control of pests and diseases.…”
