Flower stems of the Heliconiaceae family are gaining more and more space in the Brazilian market of ornamental plants and further knowledge about quality, productivity, and postharvest management is necessary. The objective of the present study was to evaluate heliconiaceae cultivated in full sun in the central-west region of Brazil in terms of agronomic traits and to determine the postharvest durability of floral stems submitted to cold storage. Accessions of Heliconia bihai cultivar Caribea, H. bihai cultivar Iris Red, and H. rauliniana were evaluated. Quantitative and qualitative morphological characteristics, the total number of flower stems produced, and number of marketable stems were obtained.Postharvest longevity was tested in a cold chamber at 16 ºC and 19 ºC and at ambient temperature of 26 ºC. Morphological characteristics such as the length, diameter and fresh mass of flower stems, inflorescence length, and postharvest durability of the inflorescences were the most affected. The most important variables were the quality of flower stems, productivity of marketable stems, and postharvest durability. The studied heliconias presented agronomic characters within the commercialization standards, highlighting H. bihai (Caribea) which presented the highest productivity. The best storage temperature for all accessions evaluated was 16 °C.

This study aims to determine chrysanthemums’ business opportunities by utilizing varieties at the difference in height to chrysanthemum crops and the impact of chrysanthemum development on farmers’ social institutions. The research was conducted purposively at the chrysanthemum production center and using the Complete Group Random Plan. The first factor is the height of the place: 300 m above sea level, 500 m above sea level, and 700 m above sea level. The second factor: chrysanthemum varieties are: Kusumaswasti, Sasikirana, Kusumapatria, Cintamani, Ratnahapsari Kusumasakti. Observed microclimate parameters: air temperature, the intensity of sunlight, and humidity of the air. Observed growth and yield parameters: height of plants, number of leaves, the diameter of stems, harvest time, and brightness of flower color. The socio-economic studies observed are business opportunities and the impact of farmers’ social, institutional development. The results show the height of the place of 500 meters above sea level affects the increasing vegetative growth of all chrysanthemums planted. The height of 700 m above sea level affects the increase of crop yields, especially the diameter of the flowers of Sasikirana, Ratnahapsari, and Kusumapatria varieties and the influence on the sharpness of the color of chrysanthemums of all varieties. Chrysanthemum agribusiness has farming opportunities as it can increase farmers’ income and social institutions dynamics. At the same time, introducing of innovations or new ventures to the farming community is not easy. This requires perseverance and the utmost patience, namely, in introducing of alternative commodities of high economic value.

Morphophysiological characterization of leaves and inflorescences of commercial mini chrysanthemum varieties

Chrysanthemum is among the oldest plants cultivated by man, being widely cultivated in Brazil. In view of its economic importance and use in breeding, the present study aims to characterize mini chrysanthemum varieties, focusing on morphological and physiological parameters. Therefore, four varieties of mini chrysanthemums, in pots, were acquired in the local market: V1 - ‘Swifty Light Pink’ (purple), V2 - ‘Diablo Time’ (red), V3 - ‘White Cherie’ (white); V4 - ‘Giovanni’ (yellow), from which they were taken leaves and inflorescences samples for measurement of height, diameter and fresh mass, as well as to quantify the total soluble sugar (TSS, %), reducing sugar (RS, %), non-reducing sugar (NRS, %), anthocyanin and chlorophyll contents. Regarding the characterization of inflorescences, it was found that ‘Diablo Time’ had the largest diameter, height and fresh weight, in these last two cases not differing from ‘Giovanni’, which had lower anthocyanin content; while the highest values of carbohydrate content were found in ‘White Cherie’. In relation to the characterization of the leaves, ‘Giovanni’ had the largest dimensions, fresh mass and chlorophyll content. Already ‘Swifty Light Pink’ stood as to the sugar contents. Thus, it is clear that there are morphophysiological differences between the chrysanthemum mini varieties, which can contribute to breeding programs.
