The present study evaluates the fruit yield and antioxidant activity of pepper genotypes as a function of nitrogen doses. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse with seven pepper genotypes: two C. annuum (116 and 163), two C. chinense (39 and 118), two C. frutescens (17 and 113), and one C. praetermissum (141), and 11 nitrogen doses (0, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256 and 512 N mg dm-3). Productive parameters were evaluated, and antioxidant compounds were determined by spectrophotometric methods. Genotypes 116 and 163 showed a higher fruit fresh mass, and genotype 141 produced the highest number of fruits per plant. Genotypes 141 and 163 were the earliest. The highest antioxidant activity was obtained in the extracts of fruits of genotype 113. Nitrogen fertilization did not affect the antioxidant content of fruits. The pepper genotypes of the present study have comparable bioactive compound contents and antioxidant activity. Therefore, they are promising genotypes for the vegetable production sector, with potential for industrial and pharmacological use.

The genus Capsicum comprises a wide variety of peppers and peppers, with different sizes, colors and flavors. The present work had the objective to characterize and evaluate the genetic divergence among eight accessions of pepper (Capsicum annuum). The experiment was developed at the Federal University of Paraíba, Areia - PB. Eight accessions of pepper belonging to the germplasm bank of the CCA-UFPB were used. The experimental design was completely randomized. Data were submitted to analysis of variance by the F test at a level of 5% and 1% significance and the means were grouped by the Scott Knott test at 5% and 1% significance. For the analysis of genetic divergence, the Tocher grouping method and canonical variables were used. The treatment effects were significant, by the F test, at a level of 1% for all the characteristics evaluated, except for crown width and stem diameter, which were significant at 5% probability. According to the results obtained in the Scott & Knott test at 5% and 1% probability, the accessions were differentiated into two to six different classes. According to Tocher’s methodology the accessions were grouped into two groups. In the analysis of the canonical variables, the first three variables explained 94.18% of the total variance, and four different groups were formed according to the graphical dispersion.

O mercado brasileiro de pimentas ornamentais tem apresentado expressivo crescimento, exigindo o conhecimento de características relacionadas a essa finalidade. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo analisar a diversidade genética em pimentas Capsicum annuum L. (Solanaceae) utilizando-se de características qualitativas e quantitativas para a seleção de genótipos promissores para uso ornamental. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com 11 genótipos e três repetições. Foram empregadas 20 características qualitativas e nove quantitativas. Utilizou-se análise multivariada e os dados qualitativos e quantitativos foram submetidos a agrupamentos hierárquicos pelo Método Ward e UPGMA, respectivamente. A análise conjunta das variáveis foi obtida com base no Algoritmo de Gower. No agrupamento com os dados qualitativos obtiveram-se seis grupos e para os dados quantitativos houve a formação de cinco grupos, sendo indicativo de diversidade genética entre os genótipos estudados. Na análise conjunta, foram formados cinco grupos possibilitando a recomendação dos genótipos GEN40, GEN57, GEN75, GEN77, GEN80 e GEN85 como os mais promissores para fins ornamentais por reunirem atributos de relevante valor estético.
