Substrate from vermiculite and cattle manure for ornamental pepper seedling production

A utilização de resíduos industriais, como o lodo de curtume, em substratos para produção de mudas é uma alternativa para redução de custos de produção, e para destinação dos resíduos industriais. O cultivo de pimentas tem ganhado espaço no mercado brasileiro favorecendo principalmente a agricultura familiar, onde um dos desafios é diminuir o custo de produção. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de diferentes concentrações de lodo de curtume bovino adicionado ao substrato comercial na germinação, desenvolvimento e qualidade de mudas de pimenta biquinho. O experimento foi conduzido em delineamento de blocos casualizados com 7 tratamentos, sendo dois substratos comerciais: Provaso® (TP) e Bioplant® (TL0); e cinco diferentes proporções de lodo desidratado (10, 30, 50, 70 e 90%) misturados ao substrato Bioplant®. Avaliou-se nesse experimento o percentual de germinação, características de desenvolvimento e Índice de Qualidade de mudas de Dickson (IQD). O potencial germinativo foi maior para os tratamentos com adição de lodo de curtume ao substrato comercial Bioplant®. Os melhores resultados para as características de desenvolvimento das mudas ocorreram com a adição de lodo desidratado ao substrato Bioplant® nos intervalos de 30 a 70% de lodo no substrato. O índice de qualidade de mudas foi maior para a mistura de 30% de lodo de curtume desidratado com Bioplant®.

There are many commercial substrates available in the market of vegetables nowadays. However, a growing pressure turned for sustainability in farming, promotes a line of utilization of waste with agricultural potential, such as the use of urban waste compost and tannery sludge, which, when available, can be used as sources of compost and alternative organic matter. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of tannery sludge associated with the urban waste compost in the substrate composition of sweet pepper seedlings, especially regarding emergence, development, and quality of seedlings. The experimental design was a randomized block design with six replications and eight treatments. The treatments consisted of mixtures of the residue of dehydrated tannery sludge and urban waste compost, varying in the proportions of 10%, 30%, 50%, 70%, 90% and 100% of each, as well as the use of a commercial substrate as a conventional treatment for the comparisons. Graphs were performed through linear regression analysis for the treatment of statistical data. The percentage of emergence, development, and quality of seedlings were evaluated 54 days after planting. The alternative substrates showed high potential in the production of seedlings, in which all the combinations used in the study were superior to the conventional treatment, except the germination, which did not present difference. The range for the use of tannery sludge in the preparation of substrates for sweet pepper seedlings is between 32.7 and 48.2% in a mixture with urban waste compost. The plants presented better quality with the use of 46.0% of tannery sludge and 54.0% of urban compost in the preparation of the substrate.

The objective was to evaluate the quality of ornamental pepper seedlings, cultivar Pyramid, in different substrate volumes, with foliar application of paclobutrazol (PBZ).The experiment was carried out at the Mato Grosso do Sul State University -UEMS, in Cassilândia -MS. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a 2 x 2 factorial scheme (growth container x foliar application of PBZ) with four replicates of 36 seedlings each. Plastic trays (cells with a volume of 50 mL) and polystyrene trays (Isopor ® , 100 mL cells) were used as containers. The treatments were: polystyrene tray with PBZ application; polystyrene tray without PBZ application; plastic tray with PBZ application and plastic tray without the application of PBZ. Plant height, root length, stem diameter, shoot dry mass, root dry mass, total dry mass, height/stem diameter ratio (H/D), shoot/root ratio (S/R) and Dickson quality index were evaluated. Foliar application of paclobutrazol resulted in robust pepper seedlings with reduced size, suitable and desirable characteristics for ornamental purposes. The polystyrene trays with higher volume cells (100 mL) contributed to the higher quality of ornamental pepper seedlings.
