Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) is one of the most cultivated vegetable crops in plastic greenhouses in Brazil because of the short cycle and its high economic value in off-season harvests. To better understand this management technique the effect of different colored polyethylene soil covers was evaluated in relation to flowering and yield of the hybrid cucumber 'Yoshinari' grafted or not on the hybrid squash 'Ikky'. The polyethylene cover colors were black, white on black and green plus a control without cover. Covered but not grafted crops had a more uniform flowering distribution. The number of flowers was greater for the white/black grafted treatment. All the polyethylene covers favored flowering for the non grafted plants. Grafting reduced flowering for the black or green polyethylene covers treatments. The fruit set increased with the use of polyethylene cover but was not influenced by grafting. The uniform distribution of flowering remained during fruiting only for grafted plants and soil covered with black or green polyethylene. Both polyethylene cover and grafting favored early harvesting. The 'Yoshinari'/'Ikky' graft caused taller plants but fruit were thicker and smaller and did not meet the commercial standard. The best quality fruit and highest yields were obtained in the black and white/black treatments, without grafting.

RESUMOEste trabalho teve como objetivo a caracterização física e físico-química de frutos de tomateiro oriundos de plantas enxertadas em comparação com plantas pés-franco. A enxertia foi realizada utilizandose o método de fenda cheia tendo o híbrido Hawaii 7996 como porta-enxerto, resistente à murcha bacteriana, e as cultivares Santa Clara e Santa Cruz Kada e o híbrido Débora Plus como enxerto. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos ao acaso, com seis tratamentos (três enxertados e três pés-franco) e cinco repetições de campo. Foram avaliadas as seguintes características: massa média dos frutos, diâmetros transversal e longitudinal, sólidos solúveis totais (SST), pH, acidez total titulável (ATT) e a relação SST/ATT. A enxertia não alterou as características acima descritas para os frutos de tomate, quando comparados aos frutos oriundos de plantas pés-franco, com exceção do pH para as duas cultivares utilizadas. O híbrido 'Hawaii 7996' pode ser utilizado como porta-enxerto com as cultivares comerciais Santa Clara e Santa Cruz Kada e o híbrido Débora Plus, sem prejuízo para a qualidade do fruto do tomateiro. ABSTRACT QUALITY CHARACTERISTICS OF TOMATO FRUITS FROM GRAFTED PLANTSThis research was conducted with the objective of characterizing the physical and physical-chemical characteristics of tomato fruits from grafted plants as compared to those from own rooted seedlings. Cultivars Santa Clara, Santa Cruz Kada, and the hybrid Débora Plus were cleft grafted on to hybrid Hawaii 7996, resistant to bacterial wilting, as the rootstock. The experimental design was the completely randomized blocks, with six treatments (three grafted and three ungrafted), with five replications in the field. It were evaluated fruit weight, length and width, total soluble solids (TSS), pH, titratable total acidity (TTA), and the ratio TSS/TTA. Grafting did not affect the above characteristics, except for pH of the two cultivars. Thus, the hybrid 'Hawaii 7996' can be used as commercial rootstock for cultivars 'Santa Clara'; 'Santa Cruz Kada' and the 'Débora Plus' hybrid, without affecting fruit quality.

RESUMOForam comparados três métodos de enxertia sobre o crescimento, floração e produção de pepino (Cucumis sativus L.), híbrido Hokuho enxertado em abóbora (Cucurbita maxima Duch.), hibrido Excite Ikky. O ensaio foi instalado em ambiente protegido na UNESP-FCA em Botucatu. Plantas enxertadas por fenda, encostia e perfuração apical foram comparadas com plantas não enxertadas. As características avaliadas foram sobrevivência de mudas, altura da planta, número de internódios, diâmetro do hipocótilo, número de dias até a floração, número de flores femininas e masculinas, número de dias até o inicio da colheita, número de frutos abortados e comerciáveis/planta em cinco semanas de colheita. O delineamento experimental foi de blocos ao acaso, com cinco repetições e dois vasos por parcela. As plantas não enxertadas apresentaram maior porcentagem de sobrevivência. A enxertia por qualquer método não influenciou na altura das plantas, mas o número de internódios foi superior nas plantas enxertadas por fenda. O diâmetro do hipocótilo e o número de frutos abortados foi maior nas plantas enxertadas. A enxertia não modificou a expressão sexual nem a produção de frutos comerciáveis/planta. Foi observada a presença de brilho na casca de todos os frutos colhidos de plantas enxertadas. Palavras-chave:Cucumis sativus L., Cucurbita maxima, enxertia, ambiente protegido. ABSTRACT Comparison of grafting methods in cucumber.A trial was carried out under protected cultivation to compare three grafting methods on growth, flowering and yield of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.), hybrid Hokuho grafted on squash (Cucurbita maxima Duch.), hybrid Excite Ikky, at UNESP in Botucatu, Brazil. Plants were grafted by cleft, approach and tongue grafting, and compared with cucumber plants without grafting. Seedling survival, plant height, node number, hypocotyl diameter, days to flowering, number of female and male flowers, days to first harvest, number of aborted fruits, and commercial fruits per plant during five weeks were evaluated. The trial was carried out in a randomized complete block design, with five replications and two plants per plot. The greatest survival rate was obtained from non-grafted plants. Grafting methods had no influence on plant height, however, node number was greater in cleft grafted plants. Hypocotyl diameter and number of fruits which failed to set were greater in grafted plants than in non grafted ones. Grafting did not affect sex expression and commercial fruit yield per plant. Fruits harvested from grafted plants were shiny.
