Show more

“…It is usually referred to simply as fly, fruitfly or Drosophila (the same terms we will use throughout this document), although the genus Drosophila has thousands of species and not all feed on fruits; only D. suzukii poses as a real threat to fruticulture as a pest ( Cook and Parks, 2022 ). From helping to establish basic principles of genetics more than 100 years ago ( Morgan, 1910 ), Drosophila then became the pupil of evolutionary biology, with a special participation of Theodosius Dobzhansky in establishing a strong research program on evolutionary population genetics in the USA and in Brazil ( Glick, 2008 ). Dobzansky’s visits to Brazil in the 1950’s, to study tropical species drew great attention to drosophilids, and laid the foundation of strong research groups in the area of evolution and population genetics, particularly at the University of São Paulo ( Magalhães and Vilela, 2014 ).…”

“…Many Brazilian geneticists were directly or indirectly linked to Theodosius Dobzhansky, one of the leading figures of the evolutionary discussion arena in the USA at that time. Dobzhansky was attracted to Brazil by a Rockfeller Foundation project and, while in São Paulo, he was mainly involved in teaching and genetic research with natural populations of Drosophila flies (Glick 2008). However, surprisingly, his studies on plant distribution in the Amazon represented a turning point for tropical pollination studies.…”

As for the most distantly separated races, there is no basis in fact to think that either biological stimulation or deterioration follows crossing.…”
