The first reports of popular disturbances in connection with Decree 798, calling for obligatory civil registration of births and deaths in the Brazilian empire, surfaced in the early days of January 1852. In the ensuing weeks, men, women, and children from across the impoverished northeastern Brazilian backlands convened in small settlements and towns to protest the decree. Local authorities reported being forced to abandon their posts, fleeing from the “mass of ignorants,” who, armed with knives and stones, threatened violence against those who would implement the law. Disturbances were reported in at least thirty-one localities, with crowds estimated at one hundred to several thousand people.

Resumo. O objetivo desse trabalho é contribuir para aprofundar a compreensão da Abdicação, analisando como e por que setores do exército se uniram aos grupos liberais contra o imperador, focalizando os acontecimentos que imediatamente precederam esse evento. Para isso, centraremos nossa análise no periódico Republico e nas ligações de seu redator Borges da Fonseca com os militares. O argumento central do artigo é o de que a imprensa teve um papel fundamental no "7 de abril", ao se transformar em locus privilegiado das disputas políticas. A análise mostrará que esse periódico ajudou a formar uma identidade política pautada pela defesa do nacional contra o despotismo dos portugueses, transformando em causa nacional conflitos internos que já ocorriam no exército, abrindo espaço para a criação de solidariedades que impulsionaram o processo de transformação política que culminou com a Abdicação.Palavras-chave: Brasil Império, Abdicação, militares, imprensa, d. Th is work seeks to contribute to a better understanding of the Abdication, analyzing how and why sections of the army joined the liberal groups against the emperor, focusing on the period that immediately preceded this event. Th e argument is that the alliance between sections of the army and the liberal groups in 1831 was possible because the expansion of the "public space" in the city of Rio de Janeiro, a process in which newspapers such as "O Republico" played a key role as they became a privileged locus for political disputes. Th e article shows that that newspaper helped to build a political identity based on the defense of Brazilian interests against Portuguese despotism, giving momentum to internal confl icts around this subject that were already taking place among sections of the army and hence triggering the process that would lead to the Abdication.

No contexto socialmente peculiar de Minas Gerais, a elite liberal-moderada desenvolveu uma pedagogia política que logrou identificar liberais e pardos, como industriosos e talentosos, opostos aos dois cativeiros – a escravidão e o despotismo – e, indo ao encontro das demandas sociais dos mesmos, conquistar o consentimento ativo desse auto-reconhecido grupo social para a direção moderada na Província. Abstract In the socially peculiar context of Minas Gerais Province, the liberal-moderate elite developed a political pedagogy that cheated to identify liberal and “half-breed”, as industrious and talented, opposing to the two captivities – the slavery and absolutism – and, going to the meeting of the social demands of the same ones, to conquer the active assent of this auto-recognized social group for the moderate direction at Province.
