-The aim of this study was to describe the composition and structure of cladocerans of littoral areas with and without macrophytes from a temporary shallow pond in the Caatinga of Pernambuco state (Brazil). Samples were taken between June 2011 and August 2012. The sampling of cladocerans and environmental variables was performed at four fixed points, using a plankton net (45 μm) and a multiparameter probe. Twenty-two cladoceran species were recorded, with two new occurrences for Pernambuco state: Chydorus cf. brevilabris and Macrothrix superaculeata. The species richness of non-planktonic cladocerans (16) was higher than that of planktonic ones (4). The mean density was 186.7 ± 273.6 ind. L -1 . Macrothrix elegans, Diaphanosoma spinulosum and Ephemeroporus hybridus were the most abundant. The fluctuation index of the main species showed greater instability during the driest months or greater rainfall, a pattern not observed for the environmental data. However, the pond did not show limnological and cladoceran structure differences between the dry and rainy seasons and between the areas with and without macrophytes. With the exception of temperature and rainfall, the structure and richness of cladocerans was not related to the fluctuation of the other variables. Warmer months had higher densities and richness of cladocerans. On the other hand, months of greatest rainfall had lower richness, especially for the Chydoridae family. Although this Caatinga pond is maintained exclusively by rainwater, the richness of cladocerans is high when compared to other tropical and subtropical ecosystems. These results suggest that rainfall and temperature exert greater control on the dynamics of cladocerans in the Caatinga's temporary shallow ponds, and demonstrate the importance of these ecosystems to biodiversity in the semiarid region.

-The wetlands found in the Brazilian Cerrado are poorly studied environments regarding ecological aspects. Assessing the diversity of aquatic invertebrates in wetlands is a challenging task, since there are no standard sampling methods that minimize the spatial effects caused by macrophytes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of a new sampling method for assessing Cladocera richness in macrophyte-rich wetlands of Brazilian Cerrado. In six wetlands, one transect was established which corresponded to a gradient of depth or change in aquatic vegetation. Samples containing cladocerans were collected using plankton net dragged among aquatic vegetation in the dry and rainy seasons. The species accumulation curves using non-parametric estimators and the overestimation of richness were used to determine the sampling efficiency. The species accumulation curves showed different asymptotic trends regarding the season and wetland studied. Especially in the rainy season, an asymptotic trend was not observed in two of the wetlands studied, which may reflect the influence of seasonality on Cladocera assemblage. Nevertheless, the overestimation of species richness showed that the method of sampling was able to find more than 60% of the estimated species richness, regardless of season or wetland studied. These results indicate that the method employed for sampling Cladocera in the Cerrado wetlands can be considered adequate.

Abstract:Zooplankton is an important community in aquatic ecosystems due to its linkage between primary producers and secondary consumers also playing a key role in cycling of organic materials. Aim: Therefore, our objective was to evaluate the effects of physicochemical variables of the water on the diversity of zooplankton community in seven tropical shallow lakes of Brazilian savannah. Methods: Zooplankton samples were taken using a bucket and filtered 200 L by a 64 µm-mesh-plankton-net, and preserved for subsequent identification. Water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, electrical conductivity, turbidity, chlorophyll-a, ammonium, nitrate, nitrite, total phosphorus, and soluble reactive phosphorus were measured. Results: The turbidity (decreases the temperature, luminosity and the system productivity) and ammonium (increases the toxicity) values were the major factors responsible for structuring the zooplankton community. On the other hand, also nitrogen and phosphorus (increase the productivity) are limiting in savannah lentic systems for the zooplankton. The higher α diversity was positively associated with aquatic macrophytes (increase of niches and refuge), whereas lakes with geographic proximity increase the similarity in species composition, decreasing the β diversity. Conclusions: We conclude that the deterministic processes (niche theory), due to species have different ecological requirements, are different responses to environmental gradients and increase the diversity in heterogenic lentic systems.Keywords: α diversity; β diversity; nutrients; habitat heterogeneity; lentic systems.Resumo: O zooplâncton é uma comunidade importante nos ecossistemas aquáticos por ser o elo entre os produtores primários e os consumidores secundários, além de desempenharem um papel fundamental no ciclo de materiais orgânicos. Objetivo: Nosso objetivo foi avaliar os efeitos das variáveis físicas e químicas da água na diversidade de zooplâncton em sete lagoas rasas tropicais da savana brasileira. Métodos: As amostras de zooplâncton foram coletadas usando balde e filtrando 200 litros em rede de plâncton com abertura de 64 µm, e preservadas para posterior identificação. A temperatura da água, oxigênio dissolvido, pH, condutividade elétrica, turbidez, clorofila-a, amônio, nitrato, nitrito, fósforo total, fósforo reativo solúvel, cobertura de macrófita da lamina d'água foram obtidos. Resultados: A turbidez (ao diminui a temperatura, a luminosidade e a produtividade do sistema) e os valores de amônio (por aumenta a toxicidade) foram os principais fatores responsáveis pela estruturação do zooplâncton. Por outro lado, o nitrogênio e o fósforo (por aumentar a produtividade) são limitantes para o zooplâncton nos sistemas lênticos de savana.
