Phytophilous cladocerans (Crustacea, Anomopoda and Ctenopoda) from Paranã River Valley, Goiás, Brazil

Abstract: ABSTRACT. A rapid assessment survey identified 39 phytophilous cladocerans species from littoral zones of rivers, permanent and temporary lagoons, and swamps of the Paranã River Valley, Goiás, Brazil, 22 are registered for the first time in Central Brazil. Aspects of the taxonomy of some of these species are discussed. Cluster analysis (UPGMA) revealed two phytophilous cladoceran assemblages, characterized by higher or lower richness and relative abundance of species of the families Daphniidae and Moinidae (fi… Show more

“…The dominance of the Chydoridae family was also reported by other researchers (Elmoor-Loureiro, 2007b;Elmoor-Loureiro and Mendonça-Galvão, 2008;Maia-Barbosa et al, 2008;Sousa and Elmoor-Loureiro, 2008;Castilho-Noll et al, 2010;Soares and Elmoor-Loureiro, 2011) (Table 4). This fact may be related to the peculiar characteristics of organisms in this family that have a thicker shell, spines and appendages specialized in grasping substrates, allowing greater mobility and success in the littoral lake areas.…”

“…Also evaluating shallow wetlands that were densely covered by macrophytes in the Parana˜River basin, Goia´s state, Elmoor-Loureiro (2007) reported richness values between 4 and 19. In another study in shallow wetlands in the Brazilian Cerrado, Sousa and Elmoor-Loureiro (2008) found 11 species in the richest site and four in the poorest site in an inventory of Cladocera fauna conducted in the Emas National Park, also in Goia´s state.…”

“…In case of Cladocera, which the most species live in association with aquatic macrophytes (Forro´et al, 2008), the information is only preliminary (Elmoor-Loureiro, 2007;Sousa and Elmoor-Loureiro, 2008). These studies presented the species richness; however, there was no attempt to assess the sampling effort because no systematized methods was used for data collection.…”

“…Zooplankton samples were taken using a bucket and filtered 200 L by a 64 µm-mesh-plankton-net, and preserved in formalin solution (4% final concentration). Organisms were identified using an optical microscope and specialized bibliography (Koste, 1978;Segers, 2007;Elmoor-Loureiro, 2007). Specimens were deposited in the Laboratory of Limnology at the University of Brasília (UnB-DF), Federal District, Brazil.…”
