Abstract

A BSTRACT. Morphology of the immaturc slagcs and of the adult ofAlpltitobius dil/peril/us (Panzcr) (Colcoptcra, Tcncbrionidac). A 1110rphological study of adult and il11l11ature stages ofthe Alphitobius diaperillus (Panzer) is presented with descriptions and original data. The insects were dissected and sludied under cOl11pound and scanning eleclron microscope. Thc structures described were: sensorial pores on lhe anlennae; aSYl11metrical l11andibles of adults and larvae; sexual dil11orphisl11 of tibi al spurs and terminal segments of pupae, and short setae on lhe urogol11phi of lhe lasl larval instar.

A novel method for sexing live adult Alphitobius diaperinus

“…If the insect attempted to turn over, partial extrusion of the genitalia occurred, making squeezing the abdomen unnecessary. Sexes were identified by contrasting the extruded structures with the genitalia schemes presented by Chernaki & Almeida (2001). Sexed beetles were conserved separately in 70% ethanol, after which the body parameters were measured.…”
