On a record of Dardanus venosus (H. Milne Edwards) (Crustacea, Anomura) from the São Paulo State, Brazil

Abstract: The present work is the first report of Dardanus venosus (H. Milne Edwards, 1848) in São Paulo State and extends the range of this species in the western Atlantic farther to the south in the Brazilian region. A total of twenty two males (mean shield length: 7.56 ± 1.62 mm, 4.7 to 10.9 mm), and fifteen females (7.25 ± 2.53 mm, 4.3 to 14.5 mm) were collected in 1987, 1998, 1999 and 2000 by scuba diving from three areas of Anchieta Island (23º33'S, 45º05'W) in the Ubatuba region, and south of São Sebastião Island… Show more

“…Finally, range extensions of decapod crustaceans have been recorded in the São Paulo coast (e.g., Mantelatto et al, 2001;Cobo et al, 2002;Camargo et al, 2010;Almeida et al, 2018;Terossi et al, 2018), including the present study. These findings are relevant to understanding the environment and community dynamics (Cobo et al, 2002), as well as in terms of biogeographic and taxonomic studies.…”

“…There are some non-exclusive reasons for the increasing records of new species and extension of distributions reported over the last few years for decapod species in Brazilian waters, such as the increased number of studies on crustaceans, as well as a larger research program and laboratories focused on marine biodiversity (Mantelatto et al, 2001;. As on the São Paulo coast, other calappids were also collected from Bahia to Rio de Janeiro with low species richness.…”

“…It is important to note that the majority of specimens in all species reported here were found occupying gastropod shells in the natural populations (99.8% of the total) studied in the same region (Mantelatto et al, 2001;Mantelatto & Garcia, 2002).…”

“…However, some hermits are known to utilize a variety of alternative shelters such as tusk shells, serpulid tubes, cavities of stones, sponges, dead corals, pieces of bamboo, bivalve shells (see Imafuku & Ando, 1999), and/or a variety of gastropod shells with the exterior surface colonized by organisms that affect shell selection (see Brooks & Mariscal, 1985). Despite the 47 hermit crab species recorded in Brazilian waters (Melo, 1999;Mantelatto et al, 2001;Nucci & Melo, 2003), there have been no reports on type of shelters other than gastropod shells occupied by hermit crabs on the Brazilian coast.…”

“…Considering the large number (46) of hermit crab species recorded in Brazilian waters (MELO, 1999;MANTELATTO et al, 2001), studies on shell selection behavior involving field and laboratory comparative observations have not been developed, except for Calcinus tibicen (Herbst, 1791) in Ubatuba region, São Paulo State ). The genus Paguristes Dana, 1852, represented by more than 100 species distributed in all tropical and subtropical oceans (PROVENZANO, 1978), has been a particularly difficult group to study .…”
