The molt cycle of the natural population of Palaemonetes argentinus Nobili, 1901 from Los Padres Lagoon, Buenos Aires, Argentina, was studied in relation to age, sex, and environmental factors. A total of 1645 individuals (740 females, 539 males, and 366 juveniles) were collected and analyzed between December 1995 and December 1996. The results indicate that the sex ratio (males:females) remains around 1:1.4 throughout most of the year. The reproductive period extends from September until February (spring and summer), with maximum sexual activity in October and November. Two cohorts originated in the spring and in the summer were differentiated. Ovigerous females arrest their molt cycle during the intermolt period to restart it after oviposition. The duration of the intermolt period does not differ between adults and juveniles. Since the percentage of premolt individuals represents 60% of the total cycle, it was classified as a diecdysic cycle. Within the studied range of water temperatures, the observed variations in the span of the different stages, indicate that this factor does not alter the molt frequency. Like in the rest of decapods, the intermolt duration of P. argentinus is modified by ovarian maturation.

ABSTRACT. T he reprodu clive aspects of lhe freshwaler sh rimp Palaem oTl palldaliJormis (S limpson) (Cruslacea, Decapoda, Palaemonidae) from Sahy Rive r, Mangaratiba, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The reprodllctive aspects of the fres hwater shri mp Palaellloll pandaliformis (Stimpson, 187 1) were tudied fro m March, 1998 to February, 1999. Monthly, samples were collected wilh sives, on lhe ri ver edge, under lhe edging vegetation or in small pools. At lhe laboratory, shri mps were sexed and measured in their totallenght, From the tip ofthe rostrllm to lhe oFtelson with precision callipters. The ovigerous shrim ps were separated and counted fo r fec llndity determination. The eggs diameter was measured wi th calibrated tereomicroscope. A total of 872 were collected among which, 46% female, 29% male and 25 % juvenil. The sex ratio was I : 1.57. Ovigerolls fe males were present dllring ali seasons, bllt the reprodllctive peak accllrred in Sp ring. The ov igero lls female showed total lenght from 23.0 to 39.6 mm . The mean fecund ity was 137 eggs per female, with a minimum of 40 eggs and a max imum of 270 eggs. The fir t sexual mat uration probably OCCllr at 23 .0 mm total lenght. The mean diameter os the eggs size was 0. Dynamics of gonadal development of Aegla platensis Schmitt (Decapoda, Anomura, Aeglidae)

One way to estimate gonadal development through the reproductive cycle is to observe the growth of the gonads related to the organs used to store energy. The aim of this study was to follow the gonadosomatic and hepatosomatic indexes during annual cycle of Aegla platensis Schmitt, 1942. Adult animals were collected in Taquara, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil (29°46'S, 50°53'W). Males and females were initially weighed and dissected and had their gonads and hepatopancreas (HP) removed and weighed in order to estimate the Gonadosomatic (GI) and hepatosomatic (HI) indexes. In females, the indexes were also compared to the degree of development of the ovaries. In males the GI showed a peak of gonadal development in the autumn (p < 0.05), just when the HI showed a decrease (p < 0.05). Females showed a rise in the GI at the end of summer and beginning of autumn (p < 0.05). In females, GI values increased as the ovary matured. In A. platensis, for both males and females, the HI never showed values lower than the GI, which may indicate that these aeglids show a different pattern of energy utilization from other decapods, where as gonadal development peaks the HI decreases markedly.
