ABSTRACT. The purpose of the present study is to examine the population structure and the breeding period of Pachycheles lIIonilifer (Dana, 1852) inhabiting sabellariid worm reefs in the littoral of Sao Paulo State coast. The specimens were obtained at 2-month intervals from Seplember/94 to July/95. The study sites were located at the rocky shores ofTen6rio and Paranapua Beaches. Individuals sampled showed a total averaged 4.4 ± 1.4 mm carapace length. Ovigerous females were more frequent in September. Despite clear differences regarding the arrangement of these sabellariid colonies, they are extremely important to the establishment and maintenance of P.lI1onilifer.

“…E m b o r a a e s t r u t u r a p o p u l a c i o n a l d e Porcellanidae seja desconhecida para o estuário do Rio Caeté, os dois picos gerais de abundância das larvas (um na seca em junho/00, outro na chuvosa em novembro/00 e outubro/00), mostram intensos períodos de recrutamento no final do período chuvoso e no final do período seco. Estes resultados coincidem com o período de recrutamento de megalopas de P. armatus para a Ilha do Farol, Paraná, sul do país (Oliveira & Masunari, 1995). De acordo com as autoras, esta espécie teve uma reprodução contínua ao longo do ano, com duas coortes bentônicas evidenciadas: uma mais prolongada e mais numerosa no verão e outra mais breve e menos abundante no inverno.…”

The life cycle of these species includes only two zoeal stages, which are distinctive by their very elongate rostral and posterolateral carapace spines, and are commonly found in estuarine meroplanktonic samples. The present study provides information about the abundance of porcellanid larvae at an estuarine system in the Amazon coastal zone, aiming to understand their distribution in relation to some physicochemical variables: seasonal, diel, tidal and lunar cycles, temperature and salinity. Samples were collected monthly from April 2000 to April 2001 with a plankton conical net with 300μm of mesh size, by horizontal hauls, in the Caeté River estuary, Pará, Brazil. Only zoeal stages of porcellanid larvae were found. In general, their abundance was greater in dry season (8.08±11.43 larvae.m -3 ) in relation to rainy season (0.99±3.13 larvae.m -3 ), and flood tide (7.52±11.40 larvae.m -3 ) in relation to ebb tide (1.11±2.14 larvae.m -3 ). Greater densities were also registered at higher degrees of salinity. The other variables, moon phases, diel cycle and temperature, had not a significant influence on porcellanid larval abundance in the Caeté River estuary.

The purpose of this study is to survey the porcellanid crab fauna inhabiting Phragmatopoma lapidosa sand reefs at Paranapuã Beach, São Vicente (SP), Brazil, and to assess species diversity, density and spatial distribution at this locality. Monthly samples were carried out from September/94 to August/ 95 in three established sampling sites along the rocky shore. Five species of Porcellanidae were recorded: Pachycheles laevidactylus, P. monilifer, Petrolisthes armatus, Pisidia brasiliensis and Megalobrachium roseum comprising 9,084 specimens. The former four species were recorded in all sampling sites while the latter ocurred only in one. The highest relative density was showed by P. laevidactylus followed by P. armatus. Remaining species were present in much lower densities, disregarding site or sampling month. In general, higher densities were registered during winter. The species, P. laevidactylus, P. monilifer and P. armatus showed an heterogeneous habitat occupation along the shore, probably reflecting different tolerance levels against salinity fluctuations.Key words: Porcelain crabs, species diversity, sabellariid reefs.
