Paratrygon aiereba (Müller & Henle, 1841): the senior synonym of the freshwater stingray disceus thayeri Garman, 1913 (chondrichthyes: potamotrygonidae)

Abstract: A review of the original descriptions and available types of the South American freshwater stingrays Trygon aiereba Müller & Henle, 1841, Trygon strogylopterus Schomburgk, 1843 and Disceus thayeri Garman, 1913 indicates that these three nominal species are synonymous. The senior name, placed in the monotypic genus Paratrygon Duméril, 1865, established for Trygon aiereba, is available and valid. Based on its description, T. aiereba is a freshwater stingray. Therefore, this taxon is not the same as Raja ajereba … Show more

“…No nominal genus available for a potamotrygonid can be applied to our new species either. Elipesurus Schomburgk, 1843, following Rosa (1985a, b) and Carvalho et al (2003) cannot be unequivocally applied and is best considered doubtful, whereas Disceus Garman, 1877 is a junior synonym of Paratrygon Duméril, 1865 (for further comments, see Rosa 1990;Carvalho et al, 2003). We note that the first authors to report on the distinctiveness of the new form were Ishihara & Taniuchi (1995), based on a juvenile aquarium specimen reportedly from the Orinoco basin (locality unconfirmed).…”

“…Compagno & Roberts, 1982Roberts & Karnasuta, 1987;Snelson, Williams-Hooper & Schmid, 1988;Thorson, 1983), fully freshwater rays appear to have only diversified in the Neotropics. The potamotrygonid family comprises some 20 species divided into three genera (two of which are monotypic), and demonstrates a considerable array of morphological variability (Rosa, 1985(Rosa, , 1990Rosa, Castello & Thorson, 1987). All potamotrygonids possess a unique (among elasmobranchs) suite of characteristics related to their obligate freshwater lifestyle.…”
