Larval development of Hexapanopeus paulensis Rathbun, 1930 (Crustacea, Brachyura, Xanthidae) under laboratory conditions

Abstract: Four zoeal stages and one megalopa stage of Hexapanopeus paulensis Rathbun, 1930 were obtained from eggs of ovigerous females from the northern coast of São Paulo State, Brazil. The experiments were performed in a climatically controlled room at 24 ±1 ºC at a salinity of 34.5%, and the animals were fed with newly hatched Artemia salina nauplii. All larval stages are illustrated and described in detail. The complete larval development consists of 4 zoeal stages and 1 megalopal stage. The main morphological char… Show more

“…Xanthidae larvae were divided to seven groups based on the characters of antenna and some other appendages (Rice, 1980;Martin, 1984;Fransozo et al, 1991). Of these groups, the larvae of Chlorodiinae were included to group I (Table 1).…”

“…Since that time several other descriptions of western Atlantic xanthid larvae have appeared (seeMartin et al 1985 (Gibbes, 1850); Montú et al 1988 for Panopeus austrobesus Williams, 1983;Martin 1988 for a review of xanthid larvae and information on phyletic utility of the megalopa stage; Bakker et al 1989 for Hexapanopeus schmitti Rathbun, 1930;Fransozo et al 1990 for Hexapanopeus paulensis Rathbun, 1930;Messerknecht et al 1991 for Eurytium limosum [previously described by Kurata et al 1981]; and Vieira 1999 for Hexapanopeus caribbaeus (Stimpson, 1871).…”

“…The captured species (bycatch) are discarded indiscriminately, including Hexapanopeus paulensis Rathbun, 1930, a crab poorly studied with only two previous studies: Fransozo et al (1991) and Silva et al (2014) on the larval development and morphometric analysis, respectively.…”
