Descrição de cinco novas espécies de Rivulus das bacias dos rios Paraná e São Francisco (Cyprinodontiformes, Rivulidae)

Abstract: ABSTRACf Description of five new species of Rivulus from Paraná and SãoFrancisco rivers basins (Cyprinodontiformes, Rivulidae) and a key to identification of the especies from Central Brazil, are given. Show more

“…The sampling area was limited to areas with dense vegetation rooted on the bank as the species uses these sites as refuges from predators (Schindler & Etzel, 2008). The fishes caught were identified based on the papers of Costa (1989Costa ( , 2005Costa ( , and 2011 as an undescribed species belonging to the Melanorivulus punctatus species complex, and named herein as Melanorivulus aff. punctatus.…”

“…Most work in relation to the Rivulidae family mainly emphasizes the morphological analyses relative to phylogeny (Parenti, 1981;Costa, 1989Costa, , 1990Costa, , 2005 molecular (Murphy & Collier, 1997;Costa, 2011) and reproduction (Arenzon et al, 1999;Shibatta, 2005;Arezo et al, 2007;Gonçalves et al, 2011). However, only one study used histological analyzes as a tool for the understanding of its reproductive cycle (Arezo et al, 2007).…”

“…Rivulus apiamici, R. pictus, R. pinima, and R. vittatus are endemic to the upper rio Paraná basin, central Brazilian plateau. Rivulus punctatus is distributed in the rio Paraguay lowlands in Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Argentina (Costa, 1989;1995a;2003a).…”

“…The M. pictus group was first studied by Costa (1989), based on fish collections deposited in the Museu de Zoologia, Universidade de São Paulo, when M. apiamici (Costa, 1989), M. pictus (Costa, 1989) and M. vittatus (Costa, 1989) were described. In September 1994, efforts were directed to firstly sample typical Melanorivulus habitats along the Paraná River Basin, but based on the great morphological variability found among populations inhabiting close neighbouring areas, Costa (1995) concluded that all populations of this vast geographical area belong to a single polymorphic species, M. pictus.…”
