Background: The potentially harmful consequences of alcohol use among undergraduates have become a growing concern in recent years. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of hazardous use of alcohol in this population and to identify demographic and psychosocial factors associated with this pattern of consumption. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study using an anonymous and self-completed questionnaire in the classroom. The questionnaire was administered to 1,290 enrolled male and female students, which comprised a proportional sample of the main areas of knowledge at University of Campinas. The questionnaire produced sociodemographic and psychosocial profiles and the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test was used to detect hazardous use of alcohol. Results: The prevalence of hazardous use of alcohol among the study participants was 24%. Male gender, subjective perceived social support in case of difficulties, being sexually active, not dating, having smoked tobacco cigarettes or marijuana, and having used other illicit psychoactive substances were associated with hazardous use of alcohol. Discussion: Variables related to gender, sexuality, affective partnerships, and consumption of other psychoactive substances were associated with hazardous use of alcohol, which was identified in a quarter of the evaluated students, and indicate the need for strategies to prevent and to treat problems.

Objective:This study compared the rates of binge drinking (BD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) reported for 2006 with those reported for 2012, exploring their associations with unprotected sex, early pregnancy, and abortion in a representative sample of women in Brazilian households.Methods:This was a descriptive analysis of data from a cross-sectional study involving randomized multistage cluster sampling of the population ≥ 14 years of age. Weighted prevalence rates and odds ratios were estimated, and serial mediation analysis was performed.Results:A total of 4,256 women were analyzed. The BD prevalence was 35.1% and 47.1% in 2006 and 2012, respectively, a significant increase, especially among women 40-59 years of age. There was no significant difference in AUD prevalence. BD (without AUD) was found to increase the odds of unprotected sex and abortion. The path analysis showed that early pregnancy was a mediator of the relationship between alcohol consumption and abortion.Conclusion:Among women in Brazil, the harmful use of alcohol is increasing, which has an impact on female reproductive health and exposure to risks. There is a need for specific prevention initiatives focusing on alcohol-related behaviors in women.

ResumoO consumo de álcool na adolescência é um fenômeno multideterminado, sendo que nele as relações familiares têm um papel destacado, tanto como fator protetor quanto como de risco. As adolescentes têm mudado seu padrão de consumo e aos poucos vem igualando ao dos meninos. Foi realizado levantamento bibliográfi co na base Web of Science, entre 2006Science, entre -2011 os descritores girls, alcohol, family, com o objetivo de apresentar uma revisão sistemática do tema. Exibem-se dados bibliométricos, que indicam uma tendência de crescimento da produção científi ca nos últimos anos. Aprofundam-se os resultados em uma análise qualitativa, destacando-se o papel que a proximidade emocional com os pais e o monitoramento parental exercem enquanto fatores de proteção para as adolescentes. Palavras-chave: Álcool, adolescência, meninas, relações familiares, fatores de risco e proteção. AbstractAlcohol consumption by teenagers is a multi-determined phenomenon. Family relations play a prominent role in it and can be both a protection and a risk factor. Teenager girls have been changing their consumption pattern, becoming more and more similar to boys'. A bibliographic survey was carried out at Web of Science database, from 2006 to 2011, with the descriptors girls, alcohol and family, aiming to present a systematic review of the topic. Bibliometric data are shown, indicating a trend of growth in scientifi c production in the last years. The results are deepened through qualitative analyses of some articles. The role of emotional proximity with parents and parental monitoring is highlighted as protection factors for girls.
