The present work evaluated the germinability and vigor of Croton urucurana seeds. 1) Seeds were sorted by color (caramel, gray and black) and were subjected to seven different pre-germination treatments followed by incubation at 20ºC, 25°C or 20/30°C. 2) Seeds were stored in cold chambers or at room temperature for up to 300 days and were subsequently incubated at 20/30ºC in a germination chamber or under greenhouse conditions. Only gray seeds showed significant germination rates. The highest first count percentages of total germination and the highest germination speed indices were observed in control seeds and in those which were treated with water or 200 mg.L -1 gibberellic acid for 12 hours. Seeds stored under refrigeration showed the highest values for all of the characteristics examined, as well as less electrical conductivity of the imbibing solution. Seedlings were more vigorous when seeds were stored for 300 days in a cold chamber. The seedlings production can be increased by incubating the seeds at alternating temperatures (20/30°C). The seeds do not need pre-germination treatments.

A Fabaceae Albizia polycephala é uma espécie clímax que ocorre naturalmente em florestas ombrófilas e estacionais, com enorme potencial para utilização na restauração de áreas degradadas. Porém há poucas informações na literatura quanto à dormência das sementes desta espécie. Com isso o objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar a germinação de sementes de Albizia polycephala, submetida a diferentes tratamentos pré-germinativos. As sementes foram coletadas em um fragmento de floresta estacional Em laboratório foram inicialmente separadas em três lotes, de acordo com seu formato, e armazenadas em geladeira. Para iniciar o experimento, as sementes foram desinfestadas e submetidas a quatro tratamentos: imersão em água, imersão em ácido sulfúrico, escarificação mecânica e testemunha. Dispostas em placas de petri com quatro repetições de cada tratamento, foram submetidos por 19 dias à temperatura de 30,0 ± 2,0 ºC com luz constante. Não observou-se diferenças entre os lotes e os tratamentos com escarificação mecânica e ácido sulfúrico potencializaram as fases iniciais da germinação das sementes.

The maintenance of seed viability during storage is influenced by several factors related to the species and to the environment. This work aimed to determine the viability of Mimosa caesalpiniifolia seeds from unripe and ripe fruits stored at different temperatures (ambient, 10 ºC, 0 ºC and -21 ºC). For this, the germination performance of the seeds was evaluated at 0, 3, 6 and 12 months of storage. The experimental design was completely randomized, with four replicates of 25 seeds per treatment. The variables evaluated were: number of germinated seeds, number of hard seeds, number of unviable seeds and number of normal seedlings. The storage potential of M. caesalpiniifolia seeds depends on the fruit maturity stage. Seeds from unripe fruits without drying do not tolerate storage. Seeds from unripe fruits with drying at 15% water content maintain viability, for 12 months, when stored at a temperature of 10 °C. Seeds from ripe fruits without drying maintain viability, for 12 months, when stored at temperatures of 0 °C and 10 °C.
