Identifying reasons for failure in biomedical research and publishing

Abstract: The regular assessment of Brazilian scientific output means that individual university departments need to constantly improve the quantity and quality of their scientific output. A significant proportion of this output involves the work of Master's and Doctoral students, but getting this work published in a suitable journal can often prove to be a challenge. Although students' lack of fluency in English is a contributing factor, many of the problems observed have an early origin in the formulation of the resea… Show more

“…In Latin America, training in clinical research methodology is limited in the medical school curriculum and doctors are not familiar with the use of different tools to perform clinical investigation. [25][26][27][28] Ideally the training of future researchers should have a direct involvement in the practical aspects of clinical research and globalization. 29 They should be under the supervision of faculty members who are accomplished investigators and learn how to review published data, research design, data collection, data analysis and research ethics.…”

“…This subject has certainly http://dx.doi.org/10.1590/S1519-38292014000400001 generated great interest. It is therefore surprising that, thirty years later, methodological errors can still be found in scientific studies, at least in the fields of biology, sociology, psychology and medicine, as identified by Ioannides himself 4 in 2005 and Bousfield 8 in 2009, which has also led to high rates of non-publication.…”

“…Our intention was to create a science game that would be educational, but also challenging and interesting enough to ensure player engagement. We also decided to perform the first version in Portuguese to avoid any language barrier that could hamper the widespread use of this game, knowing that the English skills of undergraduate and graduate students in Brazil is often relatively poor ( 7 ). Our main target audience was students enrolled in postgraduate programs in pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, toxicology, pharmacy, and medicine as they can benefit from understanding that DDD is a team effort of individual scientists with highly specific expertise working on the same project.…”
