Prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and HCV genotypes of hemodialysis patients in Salvador, Northeastern Brazil

Abstract: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection has been identified as the major cause of chronic liver disease among patients on chronic hemodialysis (HD), despite the important reduction in risks obtained by testing candidate blood donors for anti-HCV antibodies and the use of recombinant erythropoietin to treat anemia. A cross-sectional study was performed to estimate the prevalence of HCV infection and genotypes among HD patients in Salvador, Northeastern Brazil. Anti-HCV seroprevalence was determined by ELISA in 1243 H… Show more

“…31,38 In comparison to other Brazilian studies, although our rates are consistent with fi ndings from some studies, 8,12 our results were lower than those reported by several other studies (PCR positivity between 69% and 100% in anti-HCV positive patients). 7,9,10,16,39,40 This may be partially explained by the fact that the PCR technique employed in the present study had a detection limit of 200 IU/mL, which is less sensitive in HD patients, who often present low or variable viral loads.…”

“…In Brazil, several studies have been conducted to determine the distribution of HCV genotypes among different groups of individuals. Most of these studies have shown a predominance of genotype 1 (Krug et al 1996, Oliveira et al 1999, Paraná et al 2000, Busek & Oliveira 2002, Codes et al 2003, Vogler et al 2004, Martins et al 2006, Silva et al 2006. The aim of the present study was to determine with precision the frequency of each HCV genotype in the South of Brazil, by studying a large cohort of patients from Rio Grande do Sul (RS) and Santa Catarina (SC), the southernmost states of the country.…”
