L1 sequence of a new human papillomavirus type-58 variant associated with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia

Abstract: The present study on molecular characterization of a human papillomavirus (HPV) isolated in Central Brazil describes the L1 gene sequence from a new variant of HPV-58, the isolate Bsb-02. The sample was from a smear obtained from a woman with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade II. The whole L1 gene from isolate Bsb-02 was sequenced automatically, showing 99.1% nucleotide identity with the gene from the HPV-58 reference. The clustering between Bsb-02 and HPV-58 reference sequence was also supported by phy… Show more

“…A number of studies have demonstrated that certain HPV58 E6/E7 variants are associated with a higher risk of cervical cancer (15,16,(20)(21)(22)(23)(24)(25)(26)(27). In the present study, the presence and persistence of incident HPV58 E6/E7 variants was assessed during a long follow-up period in women with normal baseline cytology, as well as other risk factors associated with clearance of HPV58 infections.…”

“…The majority of studies have been performed in Asian populations where higher rates of HPV58 prevalence have been reported compared with the rest of the world (15,16,20-22). Only a few studies in Latin-American countries have evaluated the presence of HPV58 variants (23)(24)(25)(26)(27)(28)(29). Two previous publications by an Asian group analyzed samples from 15 different countries (30,31).…”

“…The PCR-RFLP of women with abnormal cervical cytology in Argentina showed a 64.2% rate of HPV-positive cases, and the prevalence of HPV 16 of 32.3% was followed by HPV 58 at 14.7% [Deluca et al, 2004]. In the central region of Brazil, a variant of the L1 sequence of HPV 58 of a cervical neoplastic lesion was isolated (Bsb-02) that was 99.15 identical to the reference HPV Veras et al, 2005]. A recent Brazilian study with 2,462 women showed that infections with multiple HPV types act synergistically in cervical carcinogenesis, and co-infection with HPVs 16 and 58 seemed particularly prone to increase risk [Trottier et al, 2006].…”
