Acute leukemias in Piauí: comparison with features observed in other regions of Brazil

Abstract: Differences in age and sex distribution as well as FAB (FrenchAmerican-British classification) types have been reported for acute leukemias in several countries. We studied the demographics and response to treatment of patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) between 1989 and 2000 in Teresina, Piauí, and compared these results with reports from Brazil and other countries. Complete data concerning 345 patients (230 ALL, 115 AML) were reviewed. AML occurred predominantly … Show more

“…As regard ALL, there were 38 cases (74.5%) with B-ALL and 13 cases (25.5%) with T-ALL. These results were in concordance with the most published data [6,12,13]. Common ALL (CD10 positive) accounted for 89.5% of B-ALL cases which is concomitant with Rego et al and Gujral et al [6,13].…”

“…Most of the previous studies reported lower APL percentages ranging from 5 to 14% of all AML cases [7][8][9][10][11] while fewer investigators stated nearly similar percentage to our results (24%) [4,5]. Rego et al [6] found completely different percentages of APL in two different cities within Table 3 Lineage demarcation markers expression in acute leukemia Brazil (7.8 and 21% of AML). Most published data indicated the predominance of M1-2 as the most common AML subtypes [5,[9][10][11].…”

“…Su incidencia en México es 5 casos por 100.000 habitantes 2 . La supervivencia en diversas regiones de Latinoamérica oscila entre 24 y 41% a 5 años [3][4][5] . En nuestro país, Arteaga y cols en el Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubirán (INNSZ) han descrito los resultados del protocolo institucional 0195 con una tasa de remisiones completas (RC) del 74% y una supervivencia global en promedio de 15 meses 6 .…”

“…However, while randomized clinical trials have reported high long-term survival rates, the results of population-based studies have shown long-term remissions in a quarter of patients only (4)(5)(6)(7). Furthermore, retrospective studies performed in developing countries have reported even lower overall survival rates (8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13).…”
