Genetic characterization of dengue virus type 3 isolates in the State of Rio de Janeiro, 2001

Abstract: The genetic characterization of dengue virus type 3 (DEN-3) strains isolated from autochthonous cases in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2001 is presented. Restriction site-specific (RSS)-PCR performed on 22 strains classified the Brazilian DEN-3 viruses as subtype C, a subtype that contains viruses from Sri Lanka, India, Africa and recent isolates from Central America. Nucleic acid sequencing (positions 278 to 2550) of one DEN-3 strain confirmed the origin of these strains, since genotype III -classif… Show more

“…8,[14][15][16] In 1999 and 2000, DENV-3 was detected in Ecuador, Venezuela, and Brazil and later in other South American countries. [17][18][19] The molecular evolution of DENV-3 has been studied in numerous American countries, including Nicaragua, Venezuela, Mexico, Brazil, Paraguay, Cuba, Peru, and Argentina. [16][17][18][20][21][22][23][24] All of these studies point to subtype III as the only DENV-3 circulating in the Western Hemisphere.…”

“…From 1995 to 2001, an increasing number of DF and DHF cases has been observed in several urban areas of the country (17). Recently, DEN-3 has been isolated in Brazil but its association with DHF has not been clearly established (27,28).…”

“…In most cases, hepatic involvement prolongs the clinical course of this self-limiting viral infection, but it does not constitute a sign of worse prognosis. [8][9][10][11][12][13][14] The present study was conducted with the primary objective of studying the serum transaminases level in various forms of dengue infection and correlate with the severity and outcome of the disease at a tertiary care hospital.…”
