Annual changes in serum calcium and inorganic phosphate levels and correlation with gonadal status of a freshwater murrel, Channa punctatus (Bloch)

Abstract: Adult Channa punctatus murrels of both sexes (60-80 g) were collected locally from Ramgarh Lake during the second week of every month (10 individuals of each sex/month) throughout the year. Blood samples were collected and analyzed for serum calcium and phosphate levels by the methods of Trinder (1960) and Fiske and Subbarow (1925), respectively. Gonads were fixed to judge the state of maturation of the fish. Males exhibited no change in serum calcium levels throughout the year in correlation with testicular m… Show more

“…A marked seasonal variation in plasma calcium level was observed in female M. armatus associated with ovarian maturation, similar to the result obtained by earlier workers in other fishes [18], [43]. Increase in its level was observed during the preparatory phase reaching the peak during pre spawning phase and spawning phase and considerably reduced during resting phase.…”

“…There exists a difference in the increase of plasma calcium level with respect to sex of the fish. It is more pronounced in females as reported from time to time by various workers [16]–[18]. The increase in plasma calcium during ovarian maturation is due to increased secretion of estrogen from the ovary [19], [20] as administration of estradiol was found to induce hypercalcemia [15], [20].…”

“…These spore sacs are separated by a thin layer of follicular cells (Sertoli cells) in each spore sac there is plenty of synchronously developing germ cells (spermatocytes and spermatids). After formation of sperms, spore sacs disintegrate and sperm enter the cavity of seminiferous tubules secreted by testis forming the so-called milt (Srivastav and Srivastav 1998).…”

“…L. Berliner, Georgia Aquarium, personal communication). This fish did have elevated plasma calcium (21.7 mg/dL) and phosphorus (18.4 mg/dL) levels, which may be indicative of folliculogenesis and chronically elevated levels of estradiol (Bailey 1957;Srivastav and Srivastav 1998). Unfortunately, estradiol blood levels were not tested in this fish.…”
