The evaluation of abiotic and biotic variables can provide information for understanding the structure and function of lotic systems. To obtain this information, measurements of 15 chemical and physical variables and of phytoplankton were conducted at two sampling stations. The present study aims to evaluate the temporal and spatial variation of planktonic diatoms in terms of abiotic variables and the trophic level of the river water and to select diatom species as descriptors of the physical and chemical conditions of the water upstream (S1) and downstream (S2) of the Iguassu River over an annual cycle. Sampling station S1 was classified as oligotrophic to mesotrophic, and S2 was classified as ultra-oligotrophic to oligotrophic. A total of 98 diatom species distributed among 39 genera was recorded, showing no dominant species but 36 abundant species. Although the differences of chemical and physical variables between S1 and S2 were limited to greater turbulence and turbidity, processes triggered by heavy rainfall exerted a significant influence on community structure, and a temporal change in composition was observed. At the end of the dry period, due to the recovery of nutrients and high transparency, there was an abundance of Cocconeis placentula var. lineata. In the rainy period, with increased turbulence and turbidity processes resulting from higher rainfall, there was an abundance of Aulacoseira granulata var. granulata.

-(Biodiversity and distribution of diatoms (Bacillariophyceae) from surface sediments in the cascading reservoirs of Paranapanema river, São Paulo and Paraná States, Brazil). Paper presents the taxonomic survey and distribution of diatoms (class Bacillariophyceae) from the surface sediments of five cascading reservoirs of the Paranapanema river. Samples were dredged from three sampling stations (upstream, middle portion, and close to the dam) of reservoirs. 44 taxa belonging to 22 genera were identified, 23 (52.3%) of which represent new records for the Paranapanema river basin, four (9.1%) for the São Paulo State, and two (4.5%) for the Paraná State. Morphometric data, relevant comments, and local spatial distribution of species in the São Paulo and Paraná States are available. Taxonomic richness was markedly greater in the first reservoir (Jurumirim) and in the sampling station with influence of the Tibagi river. Present work is a pioneer contribution to the country in regard to biodiversity and spatial distribution of diatoms in cascade reservoirs, contributing for future studies on conservation and monitoring of the Paranapanema river basin. O trabalho apresenta os resultados do inventário e da distribuição das diatomáceas da classe Bacillariophyceae de sedimentos superficiais de cinco reservatórios em cascata do rio Paranapanema. Amostras foram coletadas com draga em três locais (montante, região intermediária e lacustre) dos reservatórios. Foram identificados 44 táxons infragenéricos, sendo 23 (52,3%) novas citações para a bacia do rio Paranapanema, quatro (9,1%) para o Estado de São Paulo e duas (4,5%) para o Estado do Paraná. São disponibilizados dados morfométricos, comentários relevantes, distribuição espacial e local de ocorrência das espécies para os Estados de São Paulo e Paraná. A riqueza de espécie foi nitidamente mais elevada no primeiro reservatório da série (Jurumirim) e na estação com influência do rio Tibagi. Este trabalho traz contribuição pioneira para o país no que se refere à biodiversidade e distribuição espacial das diatomáceas em reservatórios em cascata, podendo subsidiar futuros estudos sobre conservação e monitoramento na bacia hidrográfica do rio Paranapanema. Frustulia tunariensis sp. nov. (Bacillariophyceae) from the Andes of Bolivia, South America

Frustulia tunariensis sp. nov. is originated from a high-altitude peatland in the Tunari Cordillera, a branch of the Andean range in Bolivia. The new taxon is distinguished by the thick longitudinal ribs, the globose polar nodule with faint helictoglossa that does not produce an apical extension, and by the high areola and stria density, not found in any of the morphologically closely related taxa. Features of the folded valvocopula, such as the presence of a siliceous membrane as pars interior, and poroids present in the tube-like portion opening as slits to the valve interior and as a single row of poroids to the exterior, are also unique characters in the new taxon. Based on a literature review, a comparison of the newly proposed species with morphologically similar taxa was made. Also, published information shows the potential of girdle bands to distinguish groups of species and species themselves within Frustulia. Likewise, remarks on the ecological and distribution aspects of Frustulia in the Bolivian Altiplano are included, focusing on taxonomic quality, geographic coverage and sampling, and potential to represent the genus in the high Bolivian Andean plateau.
