High irradiance and temperature inhibit the germination of spores of the fern Rumohra adiantiformis (Forst.) Ching (Dryopteridaceae)

Abstract: ABSCTRACT -(High irradiance and temperature inhibit the germination of spores of the fern Rumohra adiantiformis (Forst.) Ching (Dryopteridaceae)). Rumohra adiantiformis (Forst.) Ching is a fern (Dryopteridaceae) which is used to compose floral arrangements. Fertile fronds were harvested in the "Permanently Protected Area" of Ilha Comprida, São Paulo, Brazil. Sterilized spores were germinated in Mohr liquid medium modified by Dyer. The effect of 72%, 54%, 17% and 9% of total irradiance on germination under fiel… Show more

“…In the present work, the germination of G. pectinata was partially inhibited at 30ºC. For R. adiantiformis and P. lepidopteris, the germination was also partially inhibited at 30 ºC (Brum andRandi 2002, Viviani andRandi 2008). Similar results were observed by PerezGarcía and Riba (1982) with some tree ferns: Lophosoria quadripinnata (Gmel.)…”

“…G. pectinata showed the highest germination percentage from 5 to 20% of sunlight. (Filippini et al 1999, Renner and Randi 2004, Brum and Randi 2002, Hiendlmayer and Randi 2007, Viviani and Randi 2008. According to Haupt (1990Haupt ( , 1991Haupt ( , 1992 and Raghavan (1989) high temperatures seem to inhibit the gene expression and protein synthesis mediated by phytochrome during fern spore germination.…”

“…Desiccation is one of the usual methods of cell dehydration before freezing in liquid nitrogen (Withers & Engelmann 1998). The best sterilization method to achieve total decontamination and high germination percentages for this species involves the use of a 15% (v/v) solution of commercial sodium hypochlorite (2% of active chlorine) for 10 min before the spores had been filtered through sterile filter paper by vacuum, washing several times with sterile distilled water and dried in a laminar flow hood for 30 min (De Brum & Randi 2002). This method does not affect spore germination of R. adiantiformis but under light microscopy, a disruption of the external spore coat was verified.…”

“…De Brum & Randi (2002) analyzed the effect of irradiation and temperature on the germination of sterilized spores of R. adiantiformis. The lowest mean germination time ( t -) was observed under 9% and 17% of irradiation.…”
