Effect of abscisic acid on the mobilisation of galactomannan and embryo development of Sesbania virgata (Cav.) Pers. (Leguminosae - Faboideae)

Abstract: -(Effect of abscisic acid on the mobilisation of galactomannan and embryo development of Sesbania virgata (Cav.) Pers. (Leguminosae -Faboideae)). Galactomannans (GM) are storage cell wall polysaccharides present in endospermic seeds of legumes. They are thought to be storage polymers, since it has been observed for a few species (among them Sesbania virgata) that they are completely broken down after germination and their products are transferred to the growing embryo. We examined the effect of 10 -4 M abscisi… Show more

“…Galactomannan mobilisation is inhibited by abscisic acid (ABA) in seeds of lettuce (Halmer and Bewley, 1979), tomato (Groot and Karssen, 1992), fenugreek (Kontos and Spyropoulos, 1995) and Sesbania virgata (Potomati and Buckeridge, 2002). In these studies, exogenously applied ABA has been demonstrated to interfere with the activity of galactomannan-hydrolysing enzymes.…”

“…PERS) é um arbusto pertencente à família Fabaceae, (ARAÚJO et al, 2004). Ocorre em matas de galerias de regiões tropicais e está associada com os estágios iniciais da sucessão ecológica (POTOMATI;BUCKERIDGE, 2002). Apresenta potencial para revegetação de áreas degradadas sujeitas a inundações periódicas, em razão da tolerância a condições de baixa oxigenação e deficiências minerais do solo (KOLB et al, 2002).…”

“…Because of their viscosity and solubility in water, it has been proposed that galactomannans can also play a role as imbibing substances (Reid and Bewley, 1979;Potomati and Buckeridge, 2002).The protection of the embryo against pathogens due to the physical barrier (highly viscous) that surrounds the embryo during early stages of development is another possible function. Although such roles can be played by galactomannan, the endosperms end up being degraded and the products of hydrolysis (monosaccharides) serve as source of carbon and energy to the growing embryo.…”
