Abstract: -(Synusial structure of the herb and shrub components of a coastal subtropical forest). The herb and shrub synusiae are little known components of forest communities in tropical and subtropical regions. The floristic composition and phytosociological structure of these synusiae were studied in a dune forest (restinga) of the Coastal Plain of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Synusial composition and structure were recorded for 30 sample plots of 2 x 2 m. In each plot, presence and maximum height for herb and shrub sp… Show more

“…For herbs, vines, subshrubs and bamboo-like plants, the coverage value replaced the relative density in the calculation of the importance values, as proposed by Müller & Waechter (2001). For each spreadsheet, the values of importance of each species were converted to percentages to allow comparisons between species and different growth forms.…”

“…For each spreadsheet, the values of importance of each species were converted to percentages to allow comparisons between species and different growth forms. The Shannon diversity index (Pielou 1969) was calculated according to Müller & Waechter (2001), considering the frequency of species, because that was the phytosociological parameter obtained for the growth forms by evaluating cover or abundance.…”

“…No Brasil, o componente herbáceo é igualmente pouco conhecido.

“…The Coastal Region possesses distinct phases of vegetational succession, featuring a mosaic of floristic communities from open grassland and wet areas to arboreal communities (Waechter 1990;Waechter & Jarenkow 1998;Müller & Waechter 2001). This mosaic is determined mainly by edaphic conditions, but also by wind action and extreme insolation (Rambo 1956).…”
