Similarity among periphyton algal communities in a lentic-lotic gradient of the upper Paraná river floodplain, Brazil

Abstract: -(Similarity among periphyton algal communities in a lentic-lotic gradient of the upper Paraná river floodplain, Brazil). Floristic comparison of periphyton communities from three systems with different hydrodynamic regimes (lentic, semilotic, and lotic) was carried out during high and low water periods on the Upper Paraná River floodplain. For each period and system, glass slides were sampled every two days during 18-day periods, and Eichhornia azurea Kunth petioles were sampled three times. A total of 228 sp… Show more

“…In addition to its potential as a bioindicator, periphytic diversity has been studied in contexts such as comparisons of the flora in dry and rainy seasons (e.g., Vercellino & Bicudo 2006), comparisons of floristic similarity between lotic and lentic environments (e.g., Rodrigues & Bicudo 2001), as well as taxonomic studies (e.g., Ferragut et al 2005;Bicudo et al 2007;Bicudo & Menezes, 2006). Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the effect that climatological variables, as well as physical and chemical variables of the water, have on the taxonomic composition and abundance of periphytic algae adhered to natural substrates in a freshwater reservoir in Brazil.…”

“…We considered species richness from the quantitative analyses. Periphytic algae composition and diversity can be found in Rodrigues and Bicudo (2001a) related to the artificial substratum present in the semi-lotic system (Pau Veio Lake).…”
