Late-acting self-incompatibility in Capparis retusa (Capparaceae), a species of Chaco woodland in NE Argentina

Abstract: -(Late-acting self-incompatibility in Capparis retusa, a species of the Chaco woodland in NE Argentina). The reproductive biology of Capparis retusa was studied by means of controlled pollination experiments and fluorescence microscopy observations of post-pollination events. Self-pollinated flowers mostly failed to form fruits despite the fact that self-pollen tubes grew to the ovary and penetrated ovules within 24 h. Since embryo development to globular stage was observed in some self-fertilized ovules it wa… Show more

“…Within Eucalyptus, found fertilisation had occurred in E. regnans following both controlled self-and cross-pollinations, with no difference in embryo and endosperm development up to 16 weeks after pollination. Other examples include Capparis retusa, where some self-pollinated ovules initiated embryo development; however, 96 h after pollination these self-pollinated ovules were smaller than cross-pollinated ovules (Bianchi and Gibbs 2000). Chorisia chodatii, C. speciosa, Tabebuia caraiba and T. ochracea all form resting zygotes and undergo initial endosperm divisions following self-and cross-pollinations before self-pollinated flowers abscise (Gibbs and Bianchi 1993).…”
