Natural abundance of 13C in tropical grasses from the INPA, Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia, herbarium

Abstract: d 13C values ranging from -13.6 to -9.5‰, while the remainder 40% belonged to the C3 type, with values ranging from -34.7 to -23.4‰. This relatively high proportion of C3 species is probably due to the high relative humidity of the sites where the species were collected.]]>

“…The standard deviations of within-run organic references (bovine liver) were 0.11& for d 13 C and 0.05& for d 15 N. Unfortunately, we could not obtain enough mass to perform the isotope analysis of C 4 grass seeds from gut contents and failed to collect it in the field. We, thus, obtained isotope values of C 4 grasses in Neotropical savannahs, including the Pantanal wetlands, from the literature (Magnusson et al 1999, Medina et al 1999, Wantzen et al 2002, Bustamante et al 2004. We obtained a mean isotopic value of d 13 C = À12.86& (SD = AE0.80) and d 15 N = 2.2& (AE 0.28), and used these values in our analysis.…”

“…In relation to other forests, the υ 13 C of the várzea were similar to terra firma forests (Martinelli et al, 1998) and to the average reported by Hedges et al (1986) of species from the Amazon várzea. The photosynthesis process promotes distinct isotopic discrimination between plants that follow the C 3 and C 4 pathway of photosynthesis (Medina et al, 1999). The latter typically has a higher υ 13 C than the former.…”
