The use of crop practices to reduce the weed community is an ally to integrated weed management. Given this, the study aimed to identify a composition and weed infestation in a soybean area under different predecessor crops implanted in different years. The experiment was carried out in the 2019/2020 harvest in Dourados, MS. The experimental design was a randomized block with nine treatments. The treatments were composed of autumn-winter crops. The area with predecessor cultivation: corn-Brachiaria intercropping; cowpea beans; single corn; an area with predecessor cultivation of Brachiaria as pasture for one year; two years; three years; four years; five years, and six years. All treatments were followed by soybean cultivation in the 2018/2019 harvest and an intercropping with corn and Brachiaria in the 2019 off-season harvest. There was a difference in the absolute weed infestation between the evaluated areas. Treatments with corn and cowpea had greater weed infestation. However, areas with pasture or intercropping with corn and Brachiaria showed less infestation, especially in areas with Brachiaria grown in the off-season for more than two years. The weed species composition differs between the areas evaluated. The implantation of a corn-Brachiaria intercropping in the off-season under a crop rotation system, especially in areas with Brachiaria grown in the off-season for more than four years, reduces the weed infestation.

As plantas daninhas Digitaria ciliaris (milhã) e Ipomoea indivisa (corda-de-viola) destacam-se por ocasionarem elevados prejuízos à cultura do milho. Objetivou-se com o trabalho avaliar a interação competitiva relativa entre híbridos de milho na presença de milhã e corda-de-viola, por meio de experimentos em série substitutiva. Os experimentos foram instalados em delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. Primeiramente, tanto para os híbridos de milho (Agroeste - AS 1551 PRO 2, Morgan - MG 300 PW, Nidera - NS 92 PRO and Syngenta - Velox TL) quanto para as plantas daninhas (milhã e corda-de-viola) determinou-se a densidade de plantas em que a produção final se tornou constante (20 plantas vaso-1 ou 463 plantas m-2). Posteriormente foram instalados oito experimentos para avaliar a habilidade competitiva dos híbridos de milho com as plantas daninhas, ambos conduzidos em série de substituição, nas diferentes combinações das espécies, variando-se as proporções relativas (100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75 e 0:100%) de plantas vaso-1 (20:0; 15:5; 10:10; 5:15 e 0:20). A análise da competitividade das espécies foi efetuada por meio de diagramas aplicados a experimentos substitutivos e também pelos índices de competitividade relativa. Aos 50 dias após a emergência das espécies efetuou-se a aferição da área foliar e da massa seca da parte aérea das plantas. Os híbridos de milho e as plantas daninhas foram afetados negativamente, sendo a competição interespecífica a mais prejudicial para as espécies. A cultura apresentou os maiores índices de competitividade, de crescimento, de dominância e de agressividade. Ao se comparar as espécies entre si, o milho foi mais competitivo do que as plantas daninhas.

Abstract. This study analyses the floristic composition of field weeds recorded at the University of Ilorin Teaching and Research Farm (008° 27’ 23.9’N and 004° 39’ 42.9’E) in the southern Guinea savannah of Nigeria during the 2019 – 2021 growing seasons. The area is characterized by a bimodal rainfall pattern with an average annual rainfall of 1227.85 mm and sandy loam soil (plinthustaffs). The experiment was set up as a randomized complete block design and repeated three times in a field that had been continuously maize-cropped for 10 years. Treatments were pre-emergence applications of atrazine, metolachlor, and primextra at the rate of 1.5, 2.5, and 3.5 kg a.i.ha-1 and Weedy Check. Maize was sown and maintained using the recommended agronomic practices for ecology. Weed species composition was estimated using four continuous sample quadrats (0.5 m2) at 3, 6, 9, and 12 weeks after sowing. The weed flora consisted of 48% broadleaves, grasses 45%, and 7% sedges. Between 2019 and 2021 there was a gradual shift from the predominant annual broadleaves to induced annual grasses and a reduction in the floristic composition of the weed community by approximately 2 – 28%. Fifteen (15) weed species were predominant and the most stable weed species were Richardia scabra, Digitaria horizontalis and Digitaria sanguinalis. This requires finding an ideal weed control option that controls the negative impact of agricultural weeds on crop after yield while maintaining a diverse weed community.
