Use of Adjuvants to Optimize the Activity of Two Broad-Spectrum Herbicides for Weed Control in Wheat

Abstract: Herbicide resistance development among weeds, environmental contamination and health concerns due to the overuse of herbicides have led researchers to focus on ways to reduce herbicides to be sprayed for weed management. Adjuvants are best suited for that purpose, as they accomplish a crucial role in achieving satisfactory control of weeds by maximizing herbicidal activity. A two-year field investigation was carried out at the Agronomic Research Area, in the University of Agriculture, in Faisalabad, Pakistan d… Show more

“…Single-component adjuvants can limit only some factors, so the use of multicomponent and multifunctional adjuvants is essential [35]. The results indicate that appropriately selected multicomponent adjuvants increase herbicide efficacy [36]; the results of our own research confirm these reports. The EXP multicomponent adjuvants improved the effectiveness of the used herbicides.…”

“…This might be due to the maximum weed control in wheat along with no injury caused by the use of this herbicide quantity and adjuvant. These findings were supported with the study of Abbas et al (2018a) who described that if the herbicide is applied in combination with adjuvants, it will control weeds better and ultimately increase the grain yield.…”

“…The reason is due to the efficiency of the herbicide, which belongs to the sulfonylurea family of herbicides and is classified as an ALS (acetolactate synthase) inhibitor ,the herbicides mode of action by inhibiting the synthesis of amino acids, This prevents the cell division of weeds plants and their growth. Selectivity is caused by differences in the metabolism of sulfonylureas group between crops and weeds [15]. while the results of the interaction between the varieties and the herbicide were recorded to be superior to the SURAGE R.C treatment With Tal Afar 3 variety and SURAGE + 25 with Wafia variety, the lowest weight of the total weed was recorded at 53.293 and 52.653 g.m 2 , with an efficiency rate of 59.16% and 67.23%, respectively, compared to the control treatment for each of them.…”
