Germination Ecology of Catchfly (Silene conoidea) Seeds of Different Colors

Abstract: -Catchfly (Silene conoidea), an annual herb, is usually recognized as an emerging weed species in Eurasia and North America. The presence of somatic seed polymorphism might aid in the adaptation of this weed in different climatic conditions. We conducted laboratory and greenhouse experiments to study the seed polymorphism and influence of various environmental factors like temperature, salt stress, osmotic stress and burial depth on the germination and emergence characteristics of catchfly. Optimum germination… Show more

“…Somatic seed polymorphism appears in a small number of families, such as Asteraceae, Chenopodiaceae, Caryophyllaceae, Fabaceae, and Poaceae. Seed polymorphism increases the plants' ability to survive in extreme environments [52][53][54][55]. This mechanism could be driven by competition for nutrients during seed development, genetic constitution, seed maturation and environmental conditions, which influence seed dormancy and germination [52].…”

“…While many growers in developed countries are integrating a balanced combination of diverse weed management approaches, integrated weed management (IWM) is still at its infant stage as compared to integrated pest management (IPM). Labor shortages, higher wages, weed population shifts, changing climatic optima, unavailability of proper and timely inputs, ever increasing threats of invasive weeds, lack of knowledge and training regarding herbicides, and the financial resources by the farmers are M A N U S C R I P T A C C E P T E D ACCEPTED MANUSCRIPT Tanveer et al, 2017;Hanif et al, 2017). “…A three parameter logistic function is fitted on our experimental data using equation ( 4) (Verhulst, 1838;Tanveer et al, 2017;Soler-Guilhen et al, 2020). An additional parameter, d, has the effect of shifting the graph vertically (the lower asymptote), and it turns the three-parameter logistic to a four-parameter logistic function (Eq.…”
