In order to check the efficiency of some of pre-and post-emergence herbicides for weed control in maize. Total 14 weed control treatments carried out during two season 2017 and 2018 Preemergence as :Metribuzin, Acetochlor, Atrazine, Acetochlor, Remusulfuron, Pendimethalinand and Post-emergence as: Foramsulfuron, Nicosulfuron, Flumetsulam, Clopyralid, Diuran, Nicosulfuron and hand hoeing twice and untreated (control) .The obtained results showed that the dominant species were as the annual summer weed were Setaria verticilata (15.09%), Corchorus olitorius (14.15%), Cenchrus ciliaris(9.43 %), Echinochloa colona (8.49 %) and the perennial species were Cynodon dactylon (11.32%) and Convolvulus arevensis (9.43%). For most maize yield components, the pre-emergence herbicides were superior to post-emergence herbicides during both seasons. The higher grain yield ardab/fed treatments were produced by using pre-emergence i.e. Acetochlor (24.7 and 25.4)., Atrazine (23.7 and 24.9), Metribuzin (22.2 and 23.3) and Pendimethalin (20.3 and 22.7) Acetochlor (17.8 and 22.8) and for, post-emergence were Nicosulfuron the highest (19.6 and 20.8) and hand hoeing twice at 3 and 6 week after sowing was (21.2 and 20.4) in both season respectively. The higher efficiency in controlling weeds compared to weedy check (control) treatment or other weed control treatments. Weed control treatment pre-and post-emergence herbicides and hoeing significantly improved grain yield in both season. It could be concluded that as pre-emergence herbicides Metribuzin, Acetochlor, Arazine, Acetochlor, Remusulfuron, Pendimethalin and Nicosulfuron as post-emergence under doses and environmental conditions and also hoeing twice improved grain yield and reduced number and fresh weight of weeds.

Effect of Mesotrione and Nicosulfuron Mixtures With or Without Adjuvants

In Field experiments, a logarithmic sprayer was used to screen the efficacy of 28.5% mixture of nicosulfuron and mesotrione, and the herbicides applied separately. Three adjuvants were also used to assess how they affected the potency of the mixture. The objectives were to test whether a mixture was enhancing or detracting the effect relative to ADM (Additive Dose Model). The test plants were canola and barley. The 28.5% nicosulfuron mixture was acting antagonistic, irrespective of plant species. The antagonistic effect of the nicosulfuron mixture decreased the more developed the plants became; for barley, it almost disappeared 40 days after treatment. For both canola and barley, one adjuvant stood out as being highly effective in decreasing ED50 of the mixture. Antagonism was not alarmingly high, which is found for many herbicides. Results are discussed in relation to the practice of testing mixtures in the literature and the requirements for getting mixture patents.

Intercropping banana and shorter annual crops in small holder systems is inevitable despite shade being a limitation. Current production is also limited to the wet seasons. Strategies to exploit the spaces under banana shade and drier seasons are crucial for optimal production of these systems. We determined the performance of two legume cover crops, Mucuna pruriens and Crotalaria juncea, and chickpea (Cicer arietinum), a grain legume, under different banana shade levels and over the wet and dry seasons in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Banana and legume monocrops served as controls. Shade reduced weed biomass and legume root nodulation, biomass, and grain yields. Chickpea root nodulation had a lower sensitivity to shade (3-9% reduction) compared with mucuna (30-60%) and crotalaria (31-71%).Legume biomass yield declines varied from 37-83%, 56-93%, and 80-98% for mucuna, crotalaria, and chickpea, respectively. Higher nodulation occurred in the rainy compared with the dry season. Biomass yield declines, albeit low occurred in the dry season for mucuna (15%) and crotalaria (30%). In contrast, chickpea biomass and grain yields increased by 394% and 4487%, respectively, in the dry season. A higher banana vegetative growth occurred in the intercropped plots. Land equivalent ratios of 1.15-1.34 under dense shading for mucuna and crotalaria and 1.10-1.62 for chickpea occurred irrespective of the seasons. These findings suggest that these cover crops and chickpea could be exploited to enhance biomass (for fodder, mulch, or manure) and grain yields under banana shade and over the drier seasons.
