The aim of this study was to evaluate the weed populations of sweet sorghum hybrid CVSW 81198 and its interference capacity in increasing periods with and without weeding. Two experiments were carried out, one during the summer and another during the autumn in the municipality of Jaboticabal, São Paulo state, Brazil. For each experiment, two treatment groups were established: one consisting of increasing periods without weeding and another of increasing periods with weeding. Periods were 0, 4, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42 and 56 days after emergence (DAE) in the summer experiment and 0, 4, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56, 63 and 100 DAE in the autumn experiment. Phytosociological studies of the weed community were carried out in each treatment, with emphasis on the importance index of each weed population. Under the experimental conditions, Amaranthus spp. and Alternanthera tenella were the most important species in the weed community of sweet sorghum grown during summer and autumn, respectively. With the natural infestation of the weed community, sorghum hybrid CVSW 81198 did not suffer interference in crop development and stem productivity even without weeding throughout the crop cycle.

The competition between weeds and bean plants, mainly by nutrients of the environment, is one of the main causes of low crop yield. Therefore, the objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of nitrogen fertilization on the extension of the period prior to interference (PPI) in common beans, cultivar TAA GOL. Sowing was performed in conventional system. The treatments were divided into two groups: cover nitrogen fertilization (200 kg urea ha-1) and no cover fertilization. Within each area, we established periods of cohabitation of the crop with weeds from the emergence up to seven times of its life cycle (0-10, 0-20, 0-30, 0-40, 0-50, 0-60, 0-70 days) and a control. The experiment design was randomized blocks with three replicates. Digitaria spp. presented a greater relative importance in both areas, followed by Eleusine indica. The period prior to weed interference (PPI) in the area with nitrogen fertilization occurred up to 46 days after emergence (DAE), and only up to 3 DAE for the area without cover fertilization. There was a 30% decrease in bean productivity by comparing the area with nitrogen fertilization (2,004.79 kg ha-1) and the area without nitrogen fertilization (1,412.43 kg ha-1). Therefore, nitrogen fertilization increased crop yield and favored it competitively in relation to weeds by increasing the weed PPI.

Competition interferes with the growth and development of plants, whether of the same species or not. The aim of this work is to evaluate the intra-specific interference of slender amaranth plants (Amaranthus viridis) at different densities and distances, and in an inter-specific interaction with red pepper (Capsicum baccatum var. pendulum). The experiment was conducted in four replications and in a randomized complete block design using a factorial scheme of 2x4 + 2 controls, which represent two distances (5 and 10 cm) between the weeds and pepper (transplanted in the center of the box) and 4 densities of slender amaranth (3, 6, 9, and 12 plants m-2). Cement-asbestos boxes with a capacity of 90 L were filled with clayey soils (Red Dark Latosol). The pepper seedlings were transferred to the boxes after having three fully expanded leaves, whereas the slender amaranth seedlings were transplanted when they were 5 cm in height. Growth and yield characteristics of the crop and weeds were evaluated. As a result, it was observed that as the density increased, both species suffered more damage; the red pepper showed etiolation and reduced production, and the weeds showed a reduction in growth parameters. The distance between the plants did not interfere with their intra-and inter-specific coexistence.
