-For the successful execution of chemical weed control in sugarcane crop, the selectivity of herbicides is a factor of great importance to maximize crop yield. Each cultivar may respond differently to the same herbicide in the same dose, and selectivity is not only determined by the visual presence or absence of phytotoxicity. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of herbicides amicarbazone, tebuthiuron, and diuron + hexazinona on the electron transport rate in photosystem II (ETR), along with the development and yield of sugarcane cultivars RB867515, CTC 4, CTC 9, and CTC 17 in greenhouse, and field conditions. Under greenhouse conditions ETR was assessed by a portable fluorometer, aa well as dry weight and phytotoxicity of the plants. In field evaluations, ETR, number of stems, yield and technological characteristics were assessed. In the greenhouse, the tebuthiuron herbicide caused the lowest reduction levels of ETR, phytotoxicity and dry weight of different sugarcane cultivars, followed by amicarbazone, and diuron + hexazinona. The effects of herbicides in ETR and phytotoxicity were more intense in greenhouse conditions than in field conditions for all cultivars. Selectivity of herbicides in the post-emergence sugarcane seedlings in primary selection fields

The hypothesis here proposed is that, in primary fields of mass selection (F1) of sugarcane, herbicides exert a selective action when applied in the early post-emergence of seedlings (POST-i) and supplemented after their establishment phase (POST-l) even in sandy soils. To verify such hypothesis, the selectivity of herbicides was studied on seedlings of three sugarcane families, after their application both at early and late post-emergence in primary selection fields (F1). The field had a randomized blocks design, with five replications, and the subdivided plots scheme was used. Twelve herbicide treatments were allocated in the plots (27 m-2), whereas the sub-plots (9 m-2) contained three families of seedlings. Each sub-plot consisted of a transplanted row (0.5 x 1.50 m) with 12 individuals of the same family. Six treatments were employed, namely, T1: tebuthiuron (1200 g ha-1) post-i + ametryn (3000 g ha-1) post-l; T2: diuron (1404 g ha-1) + hexazinone (396 g ha-1) post-i + ametryn (3000 g ha-1) post-l; T3: sulfentrazone (800 g ha-1) post-i + ametryn (3000 g ha-1) post-l; T4: diuron (1404 g ha-1) + hexazinone (396 g ha-1) post-i + metribuzin (1920 g ha-1) post-l; T5: sulfentrazone (800 g ha-1) post-i + metribuzin (1920 g ha-1) post-l, and T6: weeded plot. The sugarcane families were: F400 (♀IAC086155 x ♂unknown), F43 (♀IACBIO264 × ♂IAC911099), and F14 (♀IACSP991305 × ♂GlagaH). We concluded that the herbicides tebuthiuron (1200 g ha-1), diuron (104 g ha-1) + hexazinone (396 g ha-1), or sulfentrazone (800 g ha-1), when applied in the early post-emergence and supplemented with ametryn (3000 g ha-1) or metribuzin (1920 g ha-1) in late post-emergence (60 days from planting) of the sugarcane families studied, were selective to the seedlings. That is, no toxicity symptoms with a potential to impede the final selection of seedlings occurred.

Selectivity of herbicides in initial growth of pre-budded seedlings of sugarcane

With the advent of new implantation technologies of sugarcane crop, the aim of this study was to evaluate the selectivity of herbicides in pre-budded cultivars of sugarcane seedlings. With the formation of seedlings from a gem of high sanity in tubes with substrates, seedlings, with an average height of 20 cm, were transplanted to 12 L pots filled with soil. The experimental design was a completely randomized factorial arranged in a (3x8), being the cultivars, CTC 7, CTC 14 and RB966928; and the herbicides (g ha-1): ametryn + trifloxysulfuron-sodium (1280 + 32.4); imazapic (150); halosulfuron (150); isoxaflutole (90); ametryn (5000); ametryn + clomazone (1500 + 1000) and amicarbazone (1500), applied 10 days after transplanting; and a control without application. The three cultivars of sugarcane visually studied responded differently to the application of herbicide treatments tested, being the herbicides ametryn + trifloxysulfuron, imazapic, halosulfuron and ametryn which caused less phytotoxicity. However, when confronting the other parameters analyzed, it was observed that ametryn + trifloxysulfuron, isoxaflutole, ametryn, ametryn + clomazone and amicarbazone for CTC7 cultivar, ametryn + clomazone and amicarbazone for CTC14 and amicarbazone for RB966928, caused loss to the initial development of the crop.
