The theory of constraints in manufacturing

Abstract: In this paper, a systematic and quantitative view is presented for the application of the theory of constraints in manufacturing. This is done employing the operational research technique of mathematical programming. The potential of the theory of constraints in automated manufacturing is demonstrated

“…The bottleneck is also seen as the work station with the lowest production capacity. This type of place limits the flow of goods and materials, while creating performance limits for the entire production system (Qassim, 2000). The bottleneck can be short-term, temporary -it can be a qualified employee on vacation or long-term, permanent -it can significantly slow down or even stop all production -e.g.…”

“…In the manufacturing industry, the production scheduling is a resource allocation problem in which the various resources are assigned reasonably and orderly to different tasks in the workshop according to needs, such that the operation system can achieve the optimal state at completion and the best production efficiency with the minimal cost [1,2]. In the production system, the production efficiency and product quality directly hinge on the maximum output of the production line and the scheduling of the production process [3,4].…”

“…The results showed that Enhanced TOC is better than existing TOC in respect of controlling the project length practically [12]. R. Y. Qassim applied the Operation Research technique of Mathematical Programming to identify the potential of TOC for Automated Manufacturing environment in order to maximize and improve the system performance [13].…”
