Using passive techniques for vibration damping in mechanical systems

Abstract: This paper examines two passive techniques for vibration reduction in mechanical systems: the first one is based on dynamic vibration absorbers (DVAs) and the second uses resonant circuit shunted (RCS) piezoceramics. Genetic algorithms are used to determine the optimal design parameters with respect to performance indexes, which are associated with the dynamical behavior of the system over selected frequency bands. The calculation of the frequency response functions (FRFs) of the composite structure (primary s… Show more

“…Steffen and Inman (1999) use control techniques and optimization strategies in the design of both active and passive vibration reduction devices, using piezoelectric materials. Steffen et al (2000) examine the use of passive techniques for vibration reduction combining dynamic vibration absorbers (DVAs) and piezoelectric patches coupled to resonant shunt circuits. In that work, natural optimization techniques were used in the design of the damping system.…”

“…Indeed, vibration damping [24] is a common problem for several engineering fields, e.g., civil [25,26], automotive [27,28], aerospace [29], and tooling machines [28]. Vibrations are usually reduced through active devices and control strategy [30][31][32] or passive damping [33,34]. In robotics, the vibration damping is studied for increasing the bipedal or quadrupedal performance of robots, as shown in [2,13,35,36].…”
