Characterization of Streptococcus suis through serotyping, SE-AFLP and virulence profile

Abstract: Streptococcus suis is one of most important pathogens in the swine industry worldwide. Despite its importance, studies of S. suis characterization in South America are still rare. This study evaluates S. suis isolates from distinct Brazilian states, from 1999 to 2004, and its molecular and serological characterization. A total of 174 isolates were studied. S. suis identification was confirmed by PCR and isolates were further serotyped and genotyped by SE-AFLP and amplification of virulence markers. Serotype 1,… Show more

“…In Brazil, serotype 2 is described as the most prevalent, followed by serotypes 1 2 , 14, 7, and 9 [16][17][18][19]. The results of molecular serotyping in the present study corroborate the literature with a predominance of serotype 2/ 1 2 , which was identified in 86.0% (185/215) of strains from all sites and years of isolation.…”

“…These virulence genes are directly or indirectly involved in adhesion to host cells, survival in vivo, and immune escape [7] . By analyzing the main virulence genes of S. suis strains, it would be easier to understand the molecular characteristics and pathogenicity of the strains [8][9][10] .…”

“…İzolatlar, test edilen 42 antibiyotikten 22'sine %40'ın üzerinde ve 11'ine %80'in üzerinde değişen direnç gösterdi.
