The seminal ducts (efferent ductule, epididymis, and deferent duct) in adults of Phrynops geoffroanus were examined using light microscopy. A series of tubules (efferent ductules) connect the testes to the epididymides. The efferent ductules are formed by a rete of small tubules of varying diameters, with simple columnar epithelium formed by the ciliated cells, nonciliated cells, and few basal cells. The epididymis is a simple, long and highly convoluted tubule that receives the efferent ductules throughout its extension. It is covered by a pseudostratified columnar epithelium with three cellular types: the principal cells, which are the most abundant, basal cells, and a small narrow cell. The histological differences in the epididymis region (cranial, medial, and caudal), as well as the differences in the epithelium throughout the reproductive cycle, are discussed. The deferent ducts consist of a low pseudostratified epithelium with two cellular types: the principal and basal cells. Were used 20 adult male jurará s collected at regular intervals during the year and divided into four experimental groups in the rainy and dry seasons, being processed for light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Morphometry for tubular and luminal diameters and epithelial height were also performed. On rainy season, vas deferens presented pseudostratified epithelium with cylindrical cells, spermatozoids and milky fluid in the lumen, with cytoplasmic organelles and lipid vesicles. On dry season, epithelium was pseudostratified with cuboid cells, with cellular debris and no spermatozoids. Resumo: Este estudo teve como objetivo caracterizar a morfologia dos ductos deferentes de Kinosteron scorpioides por meio de aná lise macroscó pica e microscó pica. Foram utilizados 20 machos adultos, coletados em intervalos regulares durante o ano, os quais foram divididos em quatro grupos experimentais nas estaçõ es chuvosa e seca. Os ductos deferentes foram processados para aná lise por microscopia de luz, microscopia eletrô nica de varredura e microscopia eletrô nica de transmissão. Morfometria para diâ metros tubular e luminal e altura epitelial também foram realizadas. Na época das chuvas, o ducto deferente apresentou epitélio pseudoestratificado com células cilíndricas, espermatozoides e líquido leitoso no lú men, além de com organelas citoplasmá ticas e vesículas lipídicas. Na estaçã o seca, o epitélio do ducto deferente foi do tipo pseudoestratificado com células cuboides e debris celulares, sendo que nenhum espermatozoide foi encontrado nesta estaçã o. Houve variaçã o significativa (p ,0,05) para a morfometria dos ductos deferentes, com menores valores de diâ metros tubular e luminal na estaçã o chuvosa, e maior altura do epitélio na estaçã o seca.

Epididymal region of domestic adult quail of the italina variety was studied by morphometric analysis concerning to the proximal and distal efferent ductules and the epididymal duct. They formed the proper segmental epididymal region structure in domestic quail prior observed during the four seasons of the year in the Botucatu city/SP/Brazil (22°53'09''S, 48°26'42''W, 840m), with tropical altitude climate, average annual temperature of 20,7 degrees. Parameters such as the tubular diameter and the luminal diameter, structure of the lining epithelium and luminal content, of all tubules of the epididymal region, were analyzed referring each segmental tubular area disposed along the epididymal region. It was verified that the efferent ductules occupied the major proportional distribution inside the epididymal region and plus the epididymal duct presented striking quantitative and qualitative variations during the autumn and spring. These seasons respectively represented the quiescent and active phases of this quail annual testis cycle. During summer and winter some variations of the epididymal region morphology were verified. Morphological data obtained in winter and in summer respectively allow characterizing them as intermediary phases of the annual reproductive cycle. However, no remarkable change in the proximal efferent ducts and distal efferent ducts was observed in winter and summer, for the spring events, such as already described during the annual testicular cycle of domestic quail. So the epididymal region of the domestic quail of the Italian variety is a single organ, whose size varies in the autumn, with minor relative average, and in the other seasons in which this organ maintain its usual dimensions.
