"Cara inchada" of cattle, an infectious, apparently soil antibiotics-dependant periodontitis in Brazil

Abstract: The objective of this review on the investigation of "cara inchada" in cattle (CI), pursued over the last 30 years, was to elucidate the pathogenicity of the disease and come to proper conclusions on its etiology. CI has been widely considered to be of nutritional origin, caused primarily by mineral deficiency or imbalance. However, the disease consists of a rapidly progressive periodontitis, affecting the periodontal tissues at the level of the premolars and molars during the period of tooth eruption generall… Show more

“…This disease had great economic and health impact from the 1960s to the 1980s, and was initially associated with the introduction of cattle into large, newly formed pasture land in the Southeast, Midwest and North of Brazil (Döbereiner et al 1974(Döbereiner et al , 2000. Similarly, outbreaks were recorded following the renovation of pastures in areas that were previously endemic, with severe consequences to animal health (Dutra et al 1993).…”

“…The nature of periodontal disease progression has been widely studied in horses, donkeys, cattle, dogs and cats, with artificial studies leading to further understanding the intricate workings of mobility, recession and bone resorption (Ericsson and Lindhe, 1982, Hamp et al, 1984, Lindhe et al, 1975, Lindhe and Svanberg, 1974, Sorensen et al, 1980, Clarke and Cameron, 1998, Dobereiner et al, 2000, du Toit and Dixon, 2011, Mallonee et al, 1988, Reichart et al, 1984, Dixon et al, 2000b.…”
