Objectives: To investigate the prevalence of anxiety, depression and mixed anxiety and depressive disorder (MADD) and factors associated with these conditions in women with chronic pelvic pain (CPP) compared to a pain-free control group. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 100 women with CPP and 100 without CPP. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) was used to evaluate the presence of anxiety and depression. Sociodemographic, behavioral and clinical characteristics were investigated. Fisher’s exact test was used to compare characteristics between groups. A log-binomial regression model was used, with adjustment for age, skin color, schooling, body mass index and pain. Prevalence ratios (PR), together with their 95% confidence intervals (CI), were calculated to investigate factors associated with anxiety, depression and MADD. Results: The prevalence of anxiety was 66% in the CPP group and 49% in the controls ( p =0.02). Depression was identified in 63% of the women with CPP and in 38% of the controls ( p <0.01). MADD was present in 54% of the CPP group and in 28% of the controls ( p <0.01). In the adjusted analysis, CPP (PR=1.3; 95%CI: 1.1–1.6), physical abuse (PR=1.5; 95%CI: 1.2–1.8) and sexual abuse (PR=1.5; 95%CI: 1.1–1.8) were independently associated with anxiety. Women of 25 to 34 years of age were less likely to have anxiety (PR=0.6; 95%CI: 0.4–0.8). CPP (PR=1.6; 95%CI: 1.2–2.2), physical abuse (PR=1.3; 95%CI: 1.1–1.7) and sexual abuse (PR=1.7; 95%CI: 1.3–2.2) were independently associated with depression. CPP (PR=1.9; 95%CI: 1.3–2.7), smoking (PR=1.5; 95%CI: 1.1–2.1), physical abuse (PR=1.4; 95%CI: 1.1–1.9) and sexual abuse (PR=1.4; 95%CI: 1.1–1.8) were independently associated with MADD. Conclusions: The prevalence of anxiety, depression and MADD was higher in women with CPP compared to the pain-free controls. Factors associated with mental disorders were identified. The independent association between CPP and anxiety, depression and MADD was noteworthy. These findings suggest that systematic management of psychological factors could contribute towards improving the mental health of these women.

Despite great advances in mechanical ventilation and surfactant administration for the newborn infant with life-threatening respiratory failure no specific therapies are currently established to tackle major pro-inflammatory pathways. The susceptibility of the newborn infant with neonatal acute respiratory distress syndrome (NARDS) to exogenous surfactant is linked with a suppression of most of the immunologic responses by the innate immune system, however, additional corticosteroids applied in any severe pediatric lung disease with inflammatory background do not reduce morbidity or mortality and may even cause harm. Thus, the neonatal piglet model of acute lung injury serves as an excellent model to study respiratory failure and is the preferred animal model for reasons of availability, body size, similarities of porcine and human lung, robustness, and costs. In addition, similarities to the human toll-like receptor 4, the existence of intraalveolar macrophages, the sensitivity to lipopolysaccharide, and the production of nitric oxide make the piglet indispensable in anti-inflammatory research. Here we present the physiologic and immunologic data of newborn piglets from three trials involving acute lung injury secondary to repeated airway lavage (and others), mechanical ventilation, and a specific anti-inflammatory intervention via the intratracheal route using surfactant as a carrier substance. The physiologic data from many organ systems of the newborn piglet—but with preference on the lung—are presented here differentiating between baseline data from the uninjured piglet, the impact of acute lung injury on various parameters (24 h), and the follow up data after 72 h of mechanical ventilation. Data from the control group and the intervention groups are listed separately or combined. A systematic review of the newborn piglet meconium aspiration model and the repeated airway lavage model is finally presented. While many studies assessed lung injury scores, leukocyte infiltration, and protein/cytokine concentrations in bronchoalveolar fluid, a systematic approach to tackle major upstream pro-inflammatory pathways of the innate immune system is still in the fledgling stages. For the sake of newborn infants with life-threatening NARDS the newborn piglet model still is an unsettled promise offering many options to conquer neonatal physiology/immunology and to establish potent treatment modalities.

Introdução: A dor é considerada uma manifestação perceptiva, complexa e subjetiva. Todavia, quantificar uma percepção subjetiva do indivíduo tem se demonstrado uma grande dificuldade a comunidade científica. Nesta perspectiva, a dor pélvica é delineada como uma sensação dolorosa localizada na região pélvica, sendo um dos comprometimentos mais frequentes e debilitantes do câncer de colo de útero. Objetivo: Avaliar a dor pélvica em mulheres com câncer de colo de útero. Material e Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo observacional, transversal, teve amostragem por conveniência e amostra de 10 participantes, realizado no Centro Saúde Escola do Marco (CSE) da Universidade do Estado do Pará (UEPA). Foi aplicado um formulário para caracterização sociodemográfica e econômica e a “Escala de Avaliação De Dor Pélvica”. Resultados: A média de idade foi de 48,2+11,9 anos. Em relação a percepção de dor pélvica foi verificado que dentre as 10 (dez) participantes, 9 (nove) apresentaram dor classificada de moderada à intensa, tendo como base a escala visual analógica (EVA). Conclusão: A presença da dor pélvica nas mulheres com câncer de colo de útero foi diversificada em termos de graduação, variando conforme estadiamento e tratamento adotado. Nesse sentido, a avaliação da dor de pacientes com câncer deve fazer parte da rotina da equipe de saúde de forma integrada, com cuidados para além do consultório
