Introduction: In the present study, we aimed to describe the evolution of the healing of chronic leg ulcers using the Pressure Ulcer Scale for Healing (PUSH) tool. Methods: The data were collected from July 2010 to May 2011. The inclusion of patients in the study followed the order of arrival. The lesion was evaluated weekly according to the PUSH tool. Results: The study included 15 (30%) patients with diabetes and foot ulcers and 35 (70%) patients with venous ulcers. At the beginning of the data collection process, the average ulcer length and width were 9.26 cm 2 (range, 12.1-24.0 cm 2). At 9 months of treatment, the average ulcer length and width was 2.04 cm 2 (range, 0.3-0.6 cm 2). At the beginning of the study, the average amount of exudate was 1.71 (moderate amount), whereas at 9 months after the beginning of treatment, the average amount of exudate was 0.14 (absence of exudate). At 9 months of treatment, 19 (38%) patients had closed ulcers, 17 (34%) had ulcers with granulation tissue, and 14 (28%) had ulcers with epithelialized tissue. Conclusions: Use of the PUSH tool enabled monitoring of the ulcer healing process through the evaluation of length vs. width, exudate amount, and type of tissue present in the wound, thus favoring the selection of the correct dressing for each stage of wound healing.

Objetivo: compreender como as mulheres expressam o luto diante da ferida crônica de membros inferiores. Método: estudo qualitativo desenvolvido em duas unidades de saúde do estado da Bahia, no período de março a junho de 2012. Participaram 13 mulheres. Os dados, obtidos pela aplicação do Procedimento de Desenhos-Estórias com tema e da Entrevista em Profundidade, foram analisados de acordo com o método da análise de conteúdo temáti-ca. Resultados: ao assumir um novo corpo, marcado pela presença da ferida e, portanto, considerado incompleto, as participantes vivenciaram a perda de identidade e a necessidade de elaboração de novo referencial de corpo feminino. Conclusão: o luto expressou-se por meio da negação, ira, barganha, tristeza e aceitação, sendo as fases de tristeza e aceitação mais frequentes.

Objective: To assess the Quality of Life and the Self-Esteem of patients with chronic ulcers. Methods: Analytical and cross-sectional study. One hundred and fifty patients were assessed for six months, among them seventy-five patients with chronic ulcers. Patients over 18 years of age were included, male and female, hospitalized and assisted at outpatient care centers, with intact cognition. Results: Patients with ulcers were predominantly male (p<0.002). In both groups, the average age was 62 and the most prevalent illness was hypertension (32%). The worst Functional Capacity score was observed in the group without ulcers (p=0.003); the group with ulcers registered the worst score for the Vitality aspect (p=0.042). Conclusion: Patients with chronic ulcers had the worst Quality of Life in relation to activity, little energy and willingness to carry out the Activities of Daily Living. The ulcers, however, did not affect the self-esteem of these patients. ResumoObjetivo: Avaliar Qualidade de Vida e autoestima de pacientes com úlcera crônica. Métodos: Estudo analítico e transversal. Avaliaram-se, por seis meses, 150 pacientes, sendo 75 portadores de úlcera crônica. Foram incluídos pacientes dos dois gêneros, com mais de 18 anos, internados e atendidos em ambulatório, e com cognição preservada. Resultados: Dentre os pacientes com úlcera, predominou o gênero masculino (p<0,002). Nos dois grupos, a mediana de idade foi 62 anos e a hipertensão arterial foi a doença mais prevalente (32%). Observou-se pior escore da Capacidade Funcional no grupo sem úlcera (p=0,003); o grupo com úlcera registrou pior escore para o domínio Vitalidade (p=0,042). Conclusão: Pacientes com úlceras crônicas apresentaram pior Qualidade de Vida com relação à atividade, com pouca energia e disposição para realizar as Atividades da Vida Diária. As úlceras, porém, não influenciaram na autoestima desses pacientes.
