Objective:To analyze the clinical profi le, nursing diagnoses, and nursing care established for postoperative bariatric surgery patients. Method: Cross-sectional study carried out in a hospital in southern Brazil with a sample of 143 patients. Data were collected retrospectively from electronic medical records between 2011 and 2012 and analyzed statistically. Results:We found a predominance of adult female patients (84%) with class III obesity (59.4%) and hypertension (72%). Thirty-fi ve nursing diagnoses were reported, among which the most frequent were: Acute Pain (99.3%), Risk for perioperative positioning injury (98.6%), and Impaired tissue integrity (93%). The most frequently prescribed nursing care were: to use protection mechanisms in the surgical patient positioning, to record pain as 5th vital sign, and to take vital signs. There was an association between age and comorbidities. Conclusion:The nursing diagnoses supported the nursing care prescription, which enables the qualifi cation of nursing assistance. RESUMO RESUMEN Objetivo:Analizar el perfi l clínico, diagnósticos de enfermería y cuidados de enfermería establecidos para los pacientes en postoperatorio de cirugía bariátrica. Método: Estudio transversal con la muestra de 143 pacientes. El estudio se realizó entre 2011-2012, en un hospital en el sur de Brasil. Los datos fueron recolectados retrospectivamente de los registros médicos electrónicos y analizados estadísticamente. Resultados: Se identifi caron pacientes femeninas adultas (84%), con obesidad clase III (59,4%), hipertensión (72%) y con 35 diagnósticos de enfermería, siendo los más frecuentes: el Dolor agudo (99,3%), Riesgo de lesión perioperatoria de posicionamiento (98,6%) y la Integridad del tejido deteriorado (93%). Entre los cuidados de enfermería prescritos los más utilizados fueron: utilizar los mecanismos de protección en el posicionamiento quirúrgico del paciente, registrar el dolor como quinto signo vital y verifi car los signos vitales. Se observó una asociación entre la edad y las comorbilidades. Conclusión: Los diagnósticos de enfermería apoyaron la prescripción de los cuidados de enfermería, lo que permite califi car la asistencia de enfermería. Palabras clave: Cirugía bariátrica. The objective was to evaluate the results of bariatric surgery in patients in the late postoperative period using the Bariatric Analysis and Reporting Outcome System (BAROS). This cross-sectional study was conducted from November 2011 to June 2012 at a hospital in the state of Ceará, Brazil. Data were collected from 92 patients using the BAROS protocol, which analyzes weight loss, improved comorbidities, complications, reoperations and Quality of Life (QoL). Data were analysed using the chi-squared test, Fischer's exact test and the Mann-Whitney test. There was a reduction in the Body Mass Index (47.2±6.8 kg/m2 in the pre-operatory and 31.3±5.0 kg/m2 after surgery, p<0.001). The comorbidity with the highest resolution was arterial hypertension (p<0.001), and QV improved in 94.6% of patients. The main complications were hair loss, incisional hernia and cholelithiasis. The surgery provided satisfactory weight loss and improvements in the comorbidities associated to a better QL. Use of the BAROS protocol allows nurses to plan interventions and maintain the good results.

Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) used to be a very popular bariatric procedure at a certain time for the treatment of obesity as it has many advantages and is associated with low morbidity and mortality rates. Complications are often late and are rarely seen by general surgeons due to the limited number of patients, and physicians should be aware of the symptoms. We present a case of a 40-year-old female patient who underwent LAGB and was admitted for a huge gastric pouch dilatation on postoperative day 5. She had a history of food consumption on the fourth day after surgery. She was diagnosed with early gastric band slippage (EGBS). The band was repositioned and gastrogastric sutures were placed to prevent reprolapse of the band. The EGBS is an immediate postoperative complication. Diagnosis of EGBS can be made with oral contrast X-ray studies, and surgical intervention is necessary.
