Formation of beetroot seedlings in different protected environments, substrates and containers in Aquidauana region, State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil

Abstract: This study with beetroot seedlings, cultivar Top Tall Early Wonder, was carried out at the State University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UEMS/Aquidauana), from October to November 2008. Three environments of cultivation were used: greenhouse; nursery with monofilament screen of 50 % of shading; and nursery with aluminized thermal reflective screen of 50% of shading. In these environments, three polystyrene trays of 72, 128 and 200 cells, filled with four substrates, were tested: soil; Plantmax ® ; coconut fiber and … Show more

“…Containers with a greater amount of substrate favor the growth of the embryonic axis; the consequences are demonstrated in the tallest seedlings. Results like the present study were found for beet seedlings, comparing trays of different volumes, and in those with higher volume, there was the availability of nutrients, water and physical space more adequate for root development (Oliveira et al, 2012).…”

“…DOSSEAU et al (2007) also reported that at greater shadowing conditions; with higher number of leaves Tapirira guianensis Alb with bigger leaf area. COSTA et al (2014) found best seedlings of Acrocomia Aculeata in Aluminet® screen when compared to Sombrite ® and the greenhouse with low density polyethylene while COSTA et al (2012) found no differences between the individual screen houses to the seedlings "baruzeiro" (Dipteryx alata). In the environment open air the plants showed the smallest height/collar diameter ratio (H / D).…”

“…According to OLIVEIRA et al (2012), plant ambience aims to identify the best weather conditions on production area and get better seedlings, yields and productivities. FARIA et al (2013) reported that the use of structures to protect the seedlings is very important when they are well managed, providing high quality plants with better adaptation to the field.…”

“…Apesar de ser comum a utilização de substrato a base de fibra de coco, várias pesquisas têm demonstrado que o mesmo não deve ser utilizado na produção de mudas sem a complementação com nutrientes (SAMPAIO et al, 2008;HIGUTI et al, 2010;USTULIM FILHO, 2012;OLIVEIRA et al, 2012;RAMOS et al, 2012).…”
