SUMMARYThe new Brazilian Forest Code obliges farmers to restore degraded lands on conservation set-asides required on all rural properties, known as Permanent Preservation Areas and Legal Reserves. While farmers can do so through agroforestry systems (AFS) to improve their livelihoods and offset the costs of restoration, these areas must also maintain basic ecological functions. How this can be done in practice, however, stills need to be regulated at the state level, but there are few scientific studies in Brazil on the costs and benefits of restoration through AFS. These knowledge and policy gaps have left ample room for interpretation and thus discouraged technicians from recommending -and policymakers from regulating -AFS for restoration. Aiming to bridge these gaps, this study draws from a comprehensive literature review, expert knowledge, stakeholder participation and analyses of agroforestry-based restoration efforts in the field. First, we discuss the social and ecological benefits of AFS as well as key constraints to upscaling agroforestry-based restoration. Focusing on different biophysical and social contexts within the Brazilian Cerrado and Caatinga biomes, we conclude that AFS can provide win-win solutions for reconciling livelihoods needs with conservation goals and propose practical options to do so, which vary according to farmer objectives, resource constraints and opportunities. In order to guide implementation of these agroforestry options, we propose design principles and criteria as well as key species and management practices most suited to different contexts and farmer objectives.

: Trees can modify the weed seed bank composition and distribution in the cropped area of an agroforestry system. This study aimed at analyzing the eucalyptus (Eucalyptus dunnii) effect on spatial distribution, functional traits abundance and weed seed bank botanic composition in an agroforestry system under no-tillage in Subtropical Brazil. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design with five replications, and five positions between 4.5-year-old eucalyptus double rows [(4x3) x 20 m] as treatments. Soil sampling was performed at 0-20 cm and the method to quantify and identify seeds was the seedling emergence in trays, inside a greenhouse. Weed phytosociological indices (relative density, frequency and importance), functional traits abundance (life cycle, shade tolerance, reproduction, spread and seed form) and seed densities (m-2) of families and species were evaluated; 17 weed families and 49 species were found. The indices that contributed to the relative importance of families and species differed among the positions between rows. Eucalyptus grown as an intercrop changed the composition and size of the weed seed bank, in a different way for functional traits, families and species depeding on the distance from trees.

R E S U M OO objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a influência da precipitação interna sobre a composição e estrutura da regeneração natural em um trecho de floresta ombrófila densa aluvial no estuário amazônico. Os dados foram coletados de fevereiro a julho de 2016, em quatro parcelas de 20 x 20m, subdivididas em subparcelas de 1 x 1m para análise da composição florística e estrutural da regeneração e instalados 11 pluviômetros para amostragem da precipitação. Houve pouca variação na quantidade de indivíduos, famílias, gêneros e espécies entre o período chuvoso e o menos chuvoso. Pariana campestris Aubl., Anthurium sinuatum Benth. ex, Schott, Costus arabicus L. e Costus spicatus (Jacq.) Sw. foram mais representativas devido aos impactos antrópicos na área. Conclui-se que não houve influência da precipitação interna na abundância e na riqueza de espécies da regeneração natural.Palavras-chave: Floresta de várzea; florística; estrutura. A B S T R A C T The objective of the present study was to evaluate the influence of internal precipitation on the composition and structure of natural regeneration in an alluvial dense ombrophilous forest in the Amazonian estuary. The data were collected from february to july 2016, in four 20 x 20m plots, subdivided into 1x1m subplots to analyze the floristic and structural composition of the regeneration and using 11 pluviometers to sample the precipitation. There was little variation in the number of individuals, families, genera and species between the rainy season and the less rainy season. Pariana campestris Aubl., Anthurium sinuatum Benth. Schott, Costus arabicus L. and Costus spicatus (Jacq.) Sw. were more representative due to anthropic impacts on the area. It was concluded that there was no influence of internal precipitation on the abundance and richness of natural regeneration species.Keywords: Floodplain forest, Floristic, Structure.
