Ecological restoration by direct seeding in the Cerrado biome still lacks information about native species germination, the need for dormancy overcoming and seed bank formation. This study aims to verify the effects of dormancy overcoming on germination of four tree species and the ability of 12 tree species to form seed banks for restoration use. Our results showed wide variation of species' germination rates. Overcoming dormancy enhanced germination for Dimorphandra mollis, Hymenaea stigonocarpa, and Peltophorum dubium and decreased it for Copaifera langsdorffii, but was only cost-effective for H. stigonocarpa. Regarding the ability to form seed banks, only H. stigonocarpa and Cecropia pachystachya germinated and live seedlings of Terminalia corrugata were found after being buried for six months, thus forming a transient seed bank. Despite the fact that overcoming dormancy may optimize germination after direct seeding, maintaining dormancy mechanisms of species that can form seed banks could be essential for species establishment over time in restoration areas. Hence, our key decision criteria based on seed costs and seed and labor availability would be useful for the seeding actions of restoration practitioners.

A B S T R A C TSome species of the Caatinga present seeds with dormancy, a mechanism that allows germination when the environmental conditions permit its establishment and survival; this feature is advantageous for the perpetuation and undesirable for producers that need a fast production of these plants. The study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of the application of pre-germination treatments in Angico (Anadenanthera colubrina) (Vell.) Brenan, Jurema-branca (Piptadenia stipulacea Benth.) Ducke and Mulungu (Erythrina velutina Willd.). Two independent experiments were carried out at the Serra Talhada Academic Unit using Angico, Jurema-branca and Mulungu seeds, arranged in a completely randomized design, with four replicates and 15 seeds. The seeds were submitted to pre-germination treatments: T1-control, T2-mechanical scarification on the opposite end of the thread with wood sandpaper, T3-mechanical scarification on the opposite end of the thread with wood sandpaper + immersion in water at room temperature for 24 hours and T4-heat treatment with Immersion in water at 80°C for 2 minutes. The parameters evaluated the efficiency: germination percentage and rate of emergence (IVE), biometric data (30 days after sowing), as seedling height, the number of leaves and stem diameter. The seeds of Jurema-branca (P. stipulacea) and Mulungu (E. velutina), submitted to the pre-germinative treatments T2 and T3, showed better germinative performance, reflected in the growth of the seedling. The Angico (A. colubrina) was not sensitive to the application of the treatments, and its germination was nullified for the T3 treatment application. In all cases, variations of the parameters were observed because of the atmospheric conditions.

Bromeliads are known worldwide for their ornamental potential. In Brazil, species of the genus Tillandsia occur in the Atlantic rainforest, Amazon rainforest, and rocky fields. This work aimed to evaluate the influence of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilization on micropropagated seedlings of Tillandsia bulbosa, at the acclimatization stage, and their leaf anatomy. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design, in a 4x4+1 factorial scheme, using coconut coir: earthworm humus: sand mixture as substrate (2:1:1). Urea, single superphosphate, and potassium chloride were used as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium sources, respectively, at proportions of 50, 100, 200, and 400% of the dose recommended. The doses were distributed in four applications, testing total application at planting (1); ½ application at planting and ½ at 80 DAP (2); ⅓ application at planting, ⅓ at 50 DAP, and ⅓ at 100 DAP (3); and ¼ application at planting, ¼ at 30 DAP, ¼ at 60 DAP, and ¼ at 120 DAP (4); and a control (without fertilization). Leaves anatomy was analyzed at 180 days after planting. Fertilization did not significantly influence the development of seedlings during acclimatization. The doses of 50, 100, and 200% provided thicker parenchyma of chlorophyll and aquifer and leaf blade. Tillandsia bulbosa can be acclimatized without fertilizer application.
