This study aims to detect the composition, abundance patterns, and successional stage distributions exhibited by arboreal species inside and at the linear edge of a submontane seasonal forest in the Chapada Diamantina (12°28'31'S, 41°23'14'W), Bahia, Brazil. The individual plants with breast height diameters ≥5 cm were sampled in 30 quadrats (10 m × 10 m), 15 in the forest edge and 15 inside the forest. Species were classified according to successional category. Phytosociological and diversity indices were calculated. Shannon indices were compared using Hutcheson's t-test, and the remaining parameters were analyzed by ANOVA. Linear edges exerted a high impact on the floristic composition, diversity, and abundance of species, though little interference was observed in the structure of the community, since phytosociological parameters and the proportions of successional categories did not differ between the edge and inner forest fragment. The impact of linear infrastructure was similar to that of other border types. Additionally, even though the distance between forest fragments was very short, an edge effect was observed, which underlines the importance of linear forest edges to biodiversity conservation.

RESUMOPara a análise dos grupos florísticos de uma Floresta Ombrófila Mista localizada no município de Nova Prata foram utilizadas 71 parcelas com dimensões de 10 x 100 m, distribuídas sistematicamente na área de estudo. Foram amostrados os indivíduos com circunferência na altura do peito (CAP) igual ou superior a 30,0 cm, todos identificados no nível específico. A análise de agrupamento foi realizada utilizando-se o método de Ligação Ward e a distância euclidiana como medida de dissimilaridade. Constatou-se a presença de quatro grupos florísticos distintos em que as espécies Matayba elaeagnoides, Lithraea brasiliensis, Campomanesia xanthocarpa e Myrciaria floribunda apresentaram os maiores valores de densidade. O Grupo 3 (floresta em estágio avançado) apresentou maior diversidade de espécies e maior similaridade florística com a floresta em geral. Com os resultados obtidos torna-se evidente a necessidade de considerar os agrupamentos florísticos no caso da elaboração de um plano de manejo florestal. The Cluster analysis was conducted using the Ward connection method and Euclidean distance as a measure of dissimilarity. The presence of four distinct floristic groups was verified; Matayba elaeagnoides, Lithraea brasiliensis, Campomanesia xanthocarpa and Myrciaria floribunda species presented the highest values of abundance. Group 3 (forest in adavanced stage) presented higher diversity of species and floristic similarity with the forest in general. The results evidence the need to consider the floristic groups in the case of developing a forest management plan.

Forest fragmentation may influence the soil fauna community. This study aimed to test the hypothesis that exists differences in the structure and composition of the soil arthropod communities among three Atlantic Rain Forest fragments with different sizes (SF: small; MF: medium and LF: large fragment) in Teresópolis, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The sample of the organisms occurred by means of random stratified installation of pitfall traps, during the rainy and dry seasons. The organisms were identified in taxonomic groups (mainly in order). The tested hypothesis was corroborated because the soil arthropod communities with more complex structure occurred in the MF (higher values of evenness and diversity) and in the LF (higher richness), which presented more similarity to each other, in comparison to the SF (higher total abundance). Collembola, Coleoptera, Chilopoda, Hymenoptera, Enchytraeidae and Blattodea featured the MF and the LF, whereas the SF favored Formicidae. ResumoEfeito do tamanho de fragmentos de Mata Atlântica sobre a estrutura e composição da comunidade de artrópodes do solo, RJ, Brasil. A fragmentação florestal pode influenciar a comunidade da fauna do solo. Este trabalho objetivou testar a hipótese de que existe diferença na estrutura e composição das comunidades de artrópodes do solo entre três fragmentos de Mata Atlântica com diferentes tamanhos (FP: fragmento pequeno; FM: fragmento médio; FG: fragmento grande) em Teresópolis, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. A amostragem de organismos ocorreu por meio de armadilhas de queda instaladas de maneira aleatória estratificada, nas estações chuvosa e seca. Os organismos foram identificados em grupos taxonômicos (ordem, principalmente). A hipótese testada foi corroborada, uma vez que a comunidade de artrópodes do solo com estrutura mais complexa ocorreu no FM (maiores valores de uniformidade e diversidade) e no FG (maior riqueza), os quais apresentaram maior similaridade entre si, em comparação com o FP (maior abundância total). Collembola, Coleoptera, Chilopoda, Hymenoptera, Enchytraeidae e Blattodea caracterizaram o FM e o FG, enquanto que o FP favoreceu Formicidae.
